Bengaluru: Commercial tax revenue in state goes up by 13% after introduction of GST

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, May 29: In spite of the anxiety in the reduction of tax revenue after the introduction of GST on July 1, 2017, there is an increase of 13% in the commercial tax revenue of the state government of Karnataka.

In addition to the state GST tax revenue, the compensation grant released by the central government and the sales tax collected by the sale of diesel and petrol, the total tax collected for the year 2017-18 is better than that of the last year. This has brought a joy to the officers of the commercial tax department, who expected the increase at around 9% after the introduction of the GST.

Commercial tax department used to collect good amount of tax through the Value Added Tax (VAT), that was prevalent earlier. On an average Rs 4000 crore to Rs 4200 crore of tax was collected every month. When GST was introduced in last July there was apprehension that it might upset the revenue collection.

Rs 27,567 crore collected in form of tax

From July 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, Rs 27,567 crore has been collected as tax under GST. The central government had assured that it will pay to the state government, the difference amount in the tax if the same is not equivalent to an additional 14% from the amount that was collected as tax in the year 2015-16. Accordingly, the central government has released an amount of Rs 6245 crores for the period of July 2017 to February 2018.

Reasons for rising tax revenue

The state government imposes a sales tax of 30% and 20% on the petrol and diesel respectively that is being sold in the state. As the price of the diesel and petrol is rising continuously since last year, there is also an increase in the tax revenue that is collected.

The tax that was imposed on certain selected goods during the introduction of the GST was later reduced. As the GST was reduced from 28% to 18%, 18% to 12% and 12% to 5%, the volume of business transactions increased and this also has contributed to the additional tax income of the government.

Sagacious readers must learn to congratulate the government (any) when the scheme works. Otherwise they will be named as hypocrites.
As expressed by many expert economist future generation will reap the fruits of GST and Demonitisation irrespective of Political party that head the government, provided u turn is not made.

I am no economist, but doesnt this mean the public is paying 13% more to the State GST and therefore 13% more to the Central GST; thereby the public paying 26% more to the GST fund than what we used to?
Given the returns to some states,(I read in 2017 that Karnataka is losing on what it should get; trying to find the source ) it is proven to be not fair to what we send to Delhi, does this mean the state is losing on the taxes it collects as opposed to what it should get? Please help me understand with sane language!

    Very good news.
Now the HDK Government should reduce the state tax on Petroleum and Diesel sold in Karnataka.
And that will be followed by other states too.
    30% & 20% is too much.

Looting the people with burdon of the tax is not prudence. This should be clear.LPG price increased, all most all daily essentials items increased since may 2014.Lpg,petrol price not coming down ...personal income tax slab remains the same since 2014.Except little benificiaries gorcsfnior citizens.Corporate tax reduced by 25 percent immediately in 2014 and big corporates like Ambani immensely benigitted for putting their due in election expenses. For common man only 'chembu'.....
What us the benifit for common man for all this increased revenue? If we ask the Bhaktha mandali..they show us 'road' Only road is so much important ....nothing else? Whatever you say..answer is road..road and road only.

..Dont lie..inflation is historic low...all commerical taxes/Income tax lower than Congress regime..Tax collection increased due increased tax payers base...state Govt gets 90% GST share, center getting only 10%..Petrol was Rs 35 during NDA1, it was 70 when Congress left power..there are 5-6 non BJP states, let them openly say they want GST on petrol, price will come down ..do they do!..NO...Petrol tax is main revenue for all states, GST lowers tax..if this happens state cant even pay salary to state employees ..

..all taxes came down during MODI govt after GST,, Tax payers base increased due to strict Govt compliance.. same effect we can see in Income tax..after Demo tax payers base increased..DEMO excerise cost us crores in short term, but as non tax payers now fear and started to filing return, the revenue increased which will continue every year..Congress is trying to calculate expenses of Demo exercise & misleads people but hides immediate future continued revenue to the Nation..
