Mangaluru: 5-year-old Shannel D'Souza dies after falling from 8th floor of Shaktinagar apartment

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, May 31: In a tragic incident, a young girl died after falling from the eighth floor of a residential building at Shaktinagar here on Wednesday May 30.

The deceased has been identified as Shannel Janicia D'Souza, aged five-and-a-half years, daughter of Wilson and Alithia D'Souza.

She fell from the balcony of the family's flat on the 8th floor of the building, it is said.

Sources said that Shannel was sleeping in her bedroom. As she was fast asleep, her mother Alithia went outside for sometime. In the meanwhile, Shannel woke up, went to the balcony and climbed on the grills. As the grills were not fully put up, she lost her balance and fell, sources said.

Police said that she landed on the empty verandah of the second floor and sustained critical injuries on her head and chest. She was immediately rushed to KMC hospital, where she passed away by evening.

Shannel's father Wilson works in Sharjah. The mother and daughter were staying in a rented flat at Classique Sapphire Apartments in Shaktinagar.

A case has been registered in Kankanady police station against flat owner Veena Saldanha and general power of attorney holder Valerian Monteiro on charges of negligence for not putting up full-length grills on the balcony.

Please don't comment such nonsense without knowing the complete fact. If the heartbroken mother were to ever read this, it would kill her even more. You don't know the kind of bond the mother and child shared. They were inseparable. It is easier to sit behind the computer and point fingers without knowing facts. Shame on a woman like you. How heartless and arrogant.

Putting a case on Landlord and on the person holding POA is another blunder, caveat de emptor. Buyer be beware. No one forced the tenant to rent the place. Let us pray for this family than finding faults on others cost.

Very shocking n saddening news really. Rest in Peace little angel Shannel. Dear Parents kindly accept our sincere ad heartfelt condolences on this unbelievable loss.
Police department : Why case against house owner or GPA holder? Isn't that height of stupidity? Why don't you hold occupants responsible for the accident. I am responsible for my own children's safety and not a third party. When any parents know they have a small kid & flat balcony is not safe, either you secure the balcony with proper grills or keep that balcony locked always. I do not understand idea of booking a case against owner or GPA holder? Sounds unreasonably crazy.
How can a mother leave a 5 year old child at home alone n go out of the house ? Even if you do have to go, ensure you have secured your child's safety first.

Safety is the need of hour in mangalore. As I am an ex employee of a safety department i always see everywhere deficits in safety. Accidents never tell us before happening so MCC itself should become watchdog on roads, buildings and other areas. Recently when i passed by Mangalore in one of the building i saw existing grills have been taken off to give a good approach to the basement commercial area but how dangerous it is. Is there any safety patrolling in the city to report?

    Rest In Peace dear child

The balcony is fitted with half grill and remaining area with glass lockable windows. Cannot just put the blame on the owner. Owner has done the best to make the place safe for anyone to live.
The corporation should be booked for issuing occupancy certificate if the flat was deemed unsafe.
Looks like police is harassing the power of attorney holder.

RIP Angel.. Have seen apartments built in Mangalore, when ready for sale mostly the grills of the Balcony will be approximately upto our waist level.. Once bought then the owner can raise it and most of them construct it for safety reasons.. The Builder of this apartments in KC Naik whereas the owner of the land is Valerian Monteiro and it is inappropriate to hold the owner responsible for not putting up full-length grills on the balcony. God give the strength to the Alithia D'Souza to bear the loss and the owner the strength to go through the legal issues.

RIP Shannel. This is so unfortunate and sad. Mother should have taken some responsibility if she had to go out and at least closed the door leading to the Balcony. Just two days ago read a news from France where similar irresponsibility was shown by a Father. But luckily there was a man who climbed four floors and rescued the little child heroically.

Why case only against owners? Wasn't the mother aware of the grills? Why did she leave the child alone unattended in the flat? In US and Canada for example, the parents cannot leave a child unattended at home and have to hire a baby sitter if they have to do so.
It is ridiculoud to blame the owners only. Why did the parents rent such a flat? Especially if they would be leaving the child alone in it?

Cost cutting method by some of the builders but reducing the height of the grills. We need authority to check all the grill heights in all the existing and upcoming apartments and it should be minimum of one and half meter.

Secondly, This is stupidity on part of police registering case against the owner of the building and the GPA holder. All the builders has to obtain a apartment completion certificate and occupancy certificate from the city corporation. In this case if city corporation has issued these certificates then police has to register a case against the city corporation officials who issued the certificate and not the owner of the flat.

If city corporation has not issued these two certificates the flat will not be registered by the registration officer in the name Veena Saldanha and she will not become the legal owner of that flat and she cannot give a GAP to some one.

Totally agree with u. Same situation in their other project Pearl in shakthinagara. No grills. 15th floor if u go for any party, it's a big mouth hole. All ducts open and no grills. Wall is just about 5 to 6ft. Rest is open. Inside flats nor in the common areas there are no grills. Builders assure so many things while booking the flat, but they bribe and make the corporation to give the completion certificate. This is our corrupt Govt.
