Congress wins one seat each in Meghalaya, Maharastra

Ampati, May 31: Congress candidate Miani Dalbot Shira, the eldest daughter of Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has won from Meghalaya's Ampati Assembly constituency. In Maharastra's Palus Kadegaon, Congress candidate Vishwajeet Kadam elected unopposed.

Congress candidate Miani D Shira has won the Ampati Assembly by election in Meghalaya by around 3,100 votes, beating nearest rival of the National People's Party (NPP) CG Momin. The seat fell vacant after Shira's father and Congress leader Mukul Sangma, who won from two seats in the Assembly elections, vacated the seat.

Counting for 14 Lok Sabha and Assembly by-elections is underway with the results being seen as the first big test of opposition unity ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The Lok Sabha seats where bypolls were held include Kairana in Uttar Pradesh, Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra and the lone Nagaland seat.

The Assembly constituencies awaiting results are Noorpur (Uttar Pradesh), Shahkot (Punjab), Jokihat (Bihar), Gomia and Silli (Jharkhand), Chengannur (Kerala), Ampati (Meghalaya), Tharali (Uttarakhand) and Maheshtala (West Bengal).

Congress is leading in Punjab's Shahkot, Trinamool is leading in West Bengal's Maheshtala, JDU in Bihar's Jokihat, JMM in Jharkhand's Gomia, AJSU in Silli. CPM is leading in Kerala's Chengannur, Samajwadi in UP's Noorpur, BJP in Uttarakhand's Tharali.
