Kevin Joseph's murder: The honour killing that shocked Kerala

Daijiworld Media Network - Kottayam (ANK)

Kottayam, May 31: In a shocking case of honour killing, 26-year-old Kevin was brutally murdered after being abducted by his wife's relatives.

Kevin Joseph (26) and Neenu Chacko (20), natives of Pathanapuram were in a relationship for three years and they decided to get married. Neenu belonged to a Roman Catholic family. Kevin, who belonged to Cheramar community, or a Dalit Christian. The Cheramar community, consisting of converted Christians, is considered to be a backward community and Kevin was financially poor. The end of their relationship was tragic one as Kevin was brutally murdered allegedly by the girl's family, soon after the couple's marriage.

A gang led by Neenu's brother Shanu Chacko allegedly abducted Kevin and his relative Mannaham Aneesh, who was later released by the gang. Kevin’s family remained clueless about his whereabouts. Kevin's wife Neenu lodged missing complaint with the police. On May 28, Kevin's body was found in a canal at Chaliyekkara with torture marks.

Kevin Joseph and Neenu

Married without parents' permission

On May 24, Neenu convinced her family that she had to visit Kottayam to enquire about an exam. It was utterly shocking for Neenu's family after they heard from Neenu that she had married Kevin at Kottayam.

The very next day, Neenu's family registered a complaint at Gandhi Nagar police station. The police summoned the couple to the station. Kevin and Neenu submitted their marriage documents to the police. Shockingly, the police did not permit Neenu to go with Kevin and asked her to accompany her family. Neenu left to her college hostel while Kevin moved to his relative Aneesh’s residence.

On May 27, three men broke into Aneesh’s residence and allegedly abducted both Kevin and Aneesh after brutally attacking them.

Police inaction and alleged role

Even after the missing complaint of Kevin was filed by Neenu, the police did not give much priority to the case, as the chief minister of the state was visiting Kottayam. The police could have saved Kevin if they had taken action immediately after the complaint was lodged.

Two days after the body was found, proof emerged in the form of a phone call purportedly reveals that the police had prior knowledge of Kevin's abduction and that the police even promised help to the abductors. According to a news published by The News Minute, a report by central zone IG Vijay Sakhare to the DGP says that assistant sub inspector Biju was aware of the kidnapping. The conversation between the main accused Shanu Chacko and a policeman, believed to be ASI Biju, is reported to have happened a few hours after the kidnapping. In the conversation, the policeman promises, "Whatever I can do, I will do for you Shanu", while Shanu says even though what he did was wrong, he was ready to pay for the damages caused to Kevin's house.

ASI Biju and a police driver were later arrested for their alleged roles in the murder.

Sub-inspector M S Shibhu was suspended under the direction of DGP for his negligence in the case. ASI Sunny was also put under suspension. Kottayam SP Muhammad Rafeeq was also transferred in connection with the incident. The DGP has sought a report from the IG with regard to the brutal murder.

It is gathered that a complaint alleging the police of receiving bribe from the culprit to close the case will also be probed.

Shanu Chacko

Neenu's brother Shanu, the main conspirator

The police succeeded in nabbing Niyas and Riyas, Neenu's maternal relatives for allegedly abducting and killing Kevin. It is said that Neenu's parents too were involved in the murder of Kevin. The two arrested revealed that Neenu's brother was the main culprit in the murder.

Neenu's brother Shanu Chacko reportedly included Niyas and Riyas in his gang to execute the crime. Shanu had returned from abroad on May 26 after he heard the news of his sister's marriage. The statement of the arrested persons further revealed that Shanu was the main conspirator behind the murder and the gang consisted of 13 members, most of whom are relatives of Neenu. Two of them reportedly have criminal background.

A special investigation team nabbed Chacko John and Shanu Chacko, father and brother of Neenu for hatching a conspiracy to kill Kevin. In the fear of getting arrested, the father-son duo had applied for an anticipatory bail plea earlier. Police have nabbed four culprits and eight of them are yet to be detained.

Kevin’s mortal remains were cremated at the Good Shepherded Church cemetery in Kottayam on Tuesday evening in the presence of a huge crowd which turned out to pay homage to the deceased.

This tragic incident has brought shame to the entire state. In addition, there is a political connection to this murder, with the culprits belonging to both the Congress and the CPI(M). Soon after the news of arrest of the accused spread, protests from Dalit organisations, UDF and even the Congress and the BJP erupted in the state.

There are many comments on wt I have said. Let me be very clear to evryone.

    1. Murder is wrong and I oppose it.
    2. Caste system has existed for milleniums successfully. No one raised question on this anytime except in the last 150 years. I know in an absolute world most of the things we humans uphold may not be good enough. So is it with caste.
    3. Im a Christian yes. However im a cultural being too. I have my culture, standards, practices etc. I cannot just like that marry anybody and live together.
    4. I also want to ask people, are religions meant for social status. Or in simple words is my religion meant for me to give social status? Should someone practice a religion to get higher status? In other words should someone change a religion because he does not get social status. Jesus has never promised anyone higher status. He only promised eternal life. Follow him only if you want salavation. Don't follow him him if you want higher status.
@ Oliver. Dear Oliver there is no reply button there. I reply here. Let's say I'm born in lowest of the low caste. I have every opportunity to fight my way into the top. Karnatak's deputy cm is a dalit. He has worked his way. I respect him as our dcm. Where is the problem?

    @ Frank,

here's the problem: you are swaying away from the the original point of debate which spawned from your words and I quote "There is nothing wrong in caste system. Caste system has worked well for milleniums."

And I asked you would you have the same opinion if you belonged to the lowest class? your answer about making it to the top by fighting your way up like the CM did has no relevance to the question I asked you.

The meaning of my question is: would you want the caste system to exist while you belonged to a lower cast ? would you be able to live happily in a society where people look down on you purely because of the caste you belong to regardless of how good of a human being you are?

your example of the CM: why does a person of a lower caste have to fight an unfair battle to achieve success in life while someone of a higher class does not have to go through the same struggle? would you still agree with caste system while being the lowest of castes?

I hope you understood my question

Valerian, Murder should get due punishment and it should be condemned that's no two ways about it. But, we cannot brush this under the rug even if it were a one time incident. Christianity has be portraying itself of being very righteous when it is not. The crusades, support of the Nazi's, backing up Stalin .. are these rarest of rare ?? so can we ignore the fact it caused so much of damage.
This incident of being superior / inferior has been a main stay in Christianity for ever but Christianity is in denial and quick to point to 'caste system' when it supported slavery. Even your belief that all others who don't follow Jesus will be damned to eternity .. ??.
So I don't think we can debunk this as being rarest of rare.

This is an extreme tragic case. But very common in Kerala society, it exposes the kind of caste discrimination that persists in Indian society across all religions. Kerala is known for its secular outlook, but deep below there exists a ugly and brutal form of violent culture. All the four political sides CPI, Congress, BJP and Muslim League settle scores with blood in kerala.

There is nothing wrong in caste system. Caste system has worked well for milleniums. Every society has it's own division. We need to make sure proper lineage continues. Inter-caste and inter religious marriages should completely be stoped. Modern world's opinions such as anybody can marry anybody are wrong. It's leading to immorality, divorces etc. The problem is the modern-day education. Traditionally we used to learn culture traditions etc. Today children are merely sent to schools and they know know nothing of culture background traditions etc.

Superior and inferior is there everywhere. In all religions those who belong to their religions are superior. Outsiders are inferior. As far as caste is concerned 2 of its main problems were 1.Superior and inferior. It's a wrong application 2. Untouchability it's again wrong. Today there is no untouchability.

@Frank: I agree with you that superior and inferior exists today (which is unfortunate). It exists in many forms like race, religion, sexual orientation. Now that is beyond the point of discussion here.

you mentioned that there is nothing wrong with caste system. My question to you was.. what would your perspective be if you were on the lower end of things like the inferior caste. would you still look at things the same way? would you still support the inequalities ? would you still support the "Superior"/"Inferior" division while being an inferior? . I recognize your points on untouchability . lets take that out of the equation.

    what would your perspective be?

What has happened is indeed shocking and horrible. First of all this unfortunate tragedy should not have happened in a place like Kerala, the state which boasts of 100% literacy and Mallus who always claim to be intelligent than people of other states. These people always try to impose their language and culture wherever they settle. Mallus can never ever be influenced by the so-called North Indian nonsense or culture. While they are abroad they don’t allow fellow Indians of other states to survive, will they allow outsiders to live in their state? So according to some our Karnataka may have been influenced by the northern nonsense but not Kerala.

Kerala Syrian Christians do not like to marry outside their caste. It might come as a surprise but there is is caste system among Konkani speaking catholics just like Hindus. Those catholics who converted from gsb and Maratha communities tend to look down among so called lower caste catholics. I came to know this because one of our Catholic tenants whose family traditionally provided farm labour to my ancestral Beedu house fell in love with pretty Catholic girl who belonged to gsb convert caste. Lot of drama happened and the boy finally gave up his desire to marry the girl after being beaten up once. Caste system is deeply entrenched in Indian society and it will take years to get rid of it. Even abroad people unite under caste banner like Bunts Sangha, billava Sangha, mogaveera Sangha, Beary association, Catholic association etc.

Alrighty, some believes can't accept low caste/sub-caste, never be a part of their rituals or functions, but this concept is just within them and limited to their hearts so can never change their opinion but None of the so called Religion/Caste/Sub-Caste holy teachings say - take law into your hands and murder is the only option. Their way of approach to the happening is just disgraceful to their own community. This can never be forgiven by their God's. Here the best way of solving this problem is through peace(as Christianity always shows love compassion peace that's what people actually think but not everyone practice in reality), Grow-up , practice what you preach rather than trying to become aggressive and attack people mercilessly.

This is not acceptable. Church and laity both need to condemn this act.

May be this family got inspired by RSS VHP BD hindutva ideology

Everybody is concerned about ideology, when things are happening inside our own home. Only cowards can show fingers on RSS, BD for these kind of crimes.

I know about those Mr.dinesh....but we don't care about castes like Hindus do...while attending functions we don't see which caste the person belongs...while selecting a life partner we don't see the caste..all are treated equally...

Obviously caste plays important role whatever religion...

Backward classes should not think of marrying higher class without consent...
Otherwise things would go really bad... If consent is given parents then you are lucky..otherwise look for some other... World is very big!

There is no difference within Christians in Mangalore and also there is no discrimination too. Surprised to know that there is something called Dalit Christians as our missionaries motive in converting people is only to bring them up from casteism.

Mangalore gsb and Catholic Christians originated from Goa..
How do you treat one Shetty comes to Christianity?
How do you treat one carpenter (Acharya) or goldsmith comes to Christianity?
Inter mixing may not go well in the long run..

The Venom spewing Cobras and vipers are busy spewing venow as they have the fodder for cows... Yes what happened is very wrong and the guilty should be punished. But then our Vipers and Cobras forget the fact that Honour killing, casteism, untouchability is thier gift to this world..

I pray god grant Kevin eternal rest in peace and may his family and Neenu get the strength to cope through this extremely difficult times...

I don't know about you Albert but my family always says that we are brahmin catholics. I think our former Portuguese masters too feel short of removing caste system from our community whilst shoving down their faith, language and culture onto us. Cheers.

No comment. Roman Catholics treat dalits as there fellow-being.
More of bishops included from dalit christians. They wont allow dalit christians at last row in church. All over in the world they treat black people equally as there fellow-beings. Even sunni muslims also treat shia muslim equally. Well.proud of them.

    From BBC source-
"In the town of Trichy, situated in the heart of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a wall built across the Catholic cemetery clearly illustrates ........

......groups known as Dalits are allocated space for burial on one side of the wall, while upper-caste converts are buried on the other side".

Any they preach equality to others!
