Prez Kovind says no to religious functions at Rashtrapati Bhavan; no Iftar this year

New Delhi, Jun 7 (PTI): President Ram Nath Kovind will not host an Iftar party this year at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"After the President took over office, he decided there would be no religious celebrations or observances in a public building such as Rashtrapati Bhavan on taxpayer expense. This is in keeping with the principles of a secular state and applies to all religious occasions, irrespective of religion," said Ashok Malik, Press Secretary to the president.

He said the president of course wishes all fellow citizens on every major religious festivals.

After a gap of a decade there will be no Iftar celebrations at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Iftar parties have been traditionally hosted at the Rashtrapati Bhavan except during the tenure of APJ Abdul Kalam, who was the president from 2002-2007, officials said.

Iftar is the breaking of the 'roza' (fast) that is observed by the Muslims during the month of Ramzan.

But in Delhi, Rashtrapati Bhavan, prime minister’s home and residences of all cabinet ministers remained indifferent. When chief minister Arvind Kejriwal hosted Iftar on Monday, Congress and the rest of the opposition stayed away for some inexplicit reasons.

Your Uniform Civil Code will be a disaster in a country which has multiple Religion , Sects, & tribes. By the way, you guys have not even come up with what is included in your uniform Civil Code. If you guys are planning to mix all Religions main belief or best practices and create a UCC then I challenge you people will throw that UCC on you guys face.

If our President is so strict to follow secular rules all over india, then he should instruct that no picture of any God and festivals of any religions to be performed in any Govt office. Govt office belongs to indian public of all religions and not to any particular community. Every Govt office should be free from pictures of Gods and celebration of religious festivals. Let us know when our President is going to take decision on this and will pass the circular.

If this decision will stay good for DIWALI, CHRISTMAS and other Religious celebration - we should welcome it. If Iftar is made an exception and others are not then the true colour of our religious fundamentalism will erupt. Mr. President please be impartial.

you look crazy man..... no religion events in Govt premises... No Iftar , nor Christmas , nor Deepavali... Let's be very very clear henceforth. What was that non sense introduced by some good old cunning political leaders. Nothing now. If to be introduced, them it should be for all religions... Even a personality like Abdul Kalam has done it. Only congress nominated prsidents have done it.. no need to explain again why... hope you are matured enough.

This is done to avoid celebrating feast of minorities. Diwali is not celebrated as it might lead to unwanted discussions. Sanghis will go to any length to keep the minorites at bay.
