Mangaluru, Jun 20: A day after daijiworld published a detailed report on the airport road at Bondel that has become a 'death trap' due to the frequent accidents, the traffic police took serious note of the issue and placed barricades here on Wednesday June 20.

Daijiworld had on Tuesday June 19 had published a report on the road near Bondel church where several accidents have taken place. A shocking video of a two-wheeler rider miraculously escaping with a minor injury after ramming into a car on the airport road had highlighted the risk of travelling down the stretch that has been witnessing frequent accidents.

Following the accident, residents of the area had blamed the traffic police department for not taking adequate action in the matter. They had also demanded barricades to be installed on Bondel-Padavinangady stretch and warned of protest by blocking the road if the demand was not met.

A day after daijiworld's detailed report on the perils posed by the road, traffic cop Harishekar visited the spot and placed barricades, and also gave road directions to the locals present on the occasion.

Speaking to daijiworld, traffic ACP Manjunath Shetty said, "Taking cognizance of the danger posed by speeding vehicles, and the demand of the public, we placed the barricades today. We are not able to place speed-breakers on the airport road due to technical issues, but out of safety concern, we have placed barricades.

"The barricades will have to removed during the night. We have informed the management of the school in the area to remove the barricades at the end of the day and place them back in the morning. The school management has assured us full cooperation," he said.

Here's hoping that the barricades help in at least bringing down the frequency of accidents on the stretch.

Barricades not enough – Speed-breakers needed
Like St. Lawrence church running well-patronised Kannada and English medium schools, down the same road towards the airport, 600 metres from the Bondel junction, the MGC school complex, managed by nuns, also has a similar student strength, including PUC, in their Kannada and English medium streams. There is an urgent need to install barricades opposite the dwara of MGC school complex on both sides of the median.
ACP Shetty’s statement that “We are not able to place speed-breakers on the airport road due to technical reasons” is hollow and is meant to please VIPs zooming through the road at the cost of life and limbs of the local people. Also, airport-bound taxis and cars from Kerala.
It may be noted that there is a speed-breaker on the same road opposite KPT. The locals deserve nothing less than speed-breakers without having them to move the barricades at sunset and dawn. Also, the arrangement to have private parties to move the barricades amounts to officials officials shirking their work and there would be no accountability in case of accidents.
I am sure the locals will keep up their agitation till the speed- breakers are installed in front of both the school entrances.
PS: After writing the above I passed by the spot and action taken is totally inadequate and amounts to throwing mud in the eyes of the locals.

Why the authority find so difficult to say what exactly is the technical issue?
Do they mean VIP can ride on the road on any speed and harm the life of ordinary who live the life of sacrifice ?

Putting barricade of such a quality is not a good solution. It's more hazardous to put such barricades. District administration should work with RTO, traffic Dept and DC to find a viable solution. We are always proud that Mangaloreans are very intelligent people. Let's show some of our intelligence in coming up with a Viable solution.
