Mangaluru: University Evening College starts postgraduate course in Tulu

Mangaluru, Jun 23: One who is interested to research more about the Tulu language and wants to study its literature, can now pursue postgraduation in the subject from Mangalore University.

The University Evening College in Mangaluru is all set to begin Master of Arts in Tulu. The Mangaluru University Academic Council and Syndicate have approved the annual scheme of the post-graduate course, said Mangaluru University acting vice-chancellor Prof Kishore Kumar C K.

It was Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy which mooted a proposal to start MA in Tulu and also add Tulu as an optional subject for undergraduate course.

Prof Kishori Nayak, dean of the Arts faculty said that an entrance test will be necessary while admitting the students. Diploma holders in Tulu will be exempted from the entrance test.

Those who have completed MA in Kannada with specialization in Tulu will be eligible for a teaching job for MA in Tulu.

Tulu is one of the developed Dravidian languages with a history of more than 2,600 years and is likely to enable the students to obtain its knowledge, cultural heritage and insights. It is intended that the students will develop interest in its research, culture and literature. The University is likely to start MA in Tulu during the current academic year and also introduce the language as the optional subject for undergraduate courses from the year 2019-2020.

Certificate, diploma and postgraduate Diploma courses as regular programmes will come into force from the date of assent of the Chancellor. Those who have passed SSLC are eligible for certificate course, those who have passed PUC can join diploma course in Tulu and any degree holders are eligible for PG Diploma in Tulu.
