Udupi, Jun 24: In a shameful incident, miscreants damaged the granite seats on either sides of the sea walkway at Malpe here. It is said that the act was committed a few days ago.
A few months ago, some miscreants had damaged the sculpture of a fishermen’s family made by artist Purushottam Adve. It was later repaired. But now for the second time a group of miscreants have damaged the seats, thereby spoiling the beauty of the sea walkway.
Taking serious note of the incident, Malpe beach development committee has decided to install CCTVs and a gate at the entrance of the walkway. The damages will be repaired soon, informed Sudesh of Malpe beach development committee. The loss incurred has not yet been estimated. In addition, he said that the committee contacted Malpe police sub-inspector and decided to register a complaint.
"We have decided to stop public's entry into the sea walkway after 9 pm. We do not know who has committed the act. We had a word with the circle inspector and the sub-inspector of Malpe police station," said Sudesh.
According to Sudesh, the committee is not getting any cooperation from tourists with regard to the maintenance of cleanliness at the sea walkway and its surroundings. Liquor and soft drink bottles, plastics and other waste are being strewn. In addition, some people ride two-wheelers in the walkway which damages the flooring. To prevent all these acts, the committee will install a gate at the entrance.
"Tourists must protect this beautiful landmark of Udupi instead of spoiling its beauty. The deputy commissioner and the beach committee have to take serious action against miscreants," Sudesh said.
The sea walkway, the first in the state, was inaugurated at the tourist jetty at Malpe here on January 27 this year. The breathtaking structure was constructed at a cost of Rs 53.5 lac. With slip-proof floor below, the walkway is 450 metre long and 2.4 metre wide.
Three islands namely St Mary's Island, Light House Island, and Bhadargad Island can be seen from the walkway.
