Mumbai, Sep 29: Narayan Kharvi, the newly-appointed president of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, was felicitated by community brethren in the metro on Saturday September 27. The programme was organized by Konkani Kharvi Samaj Welfare Association at Vishnu Park, Virar.
Speaking on the occasion, Kharvi expressed the need for Konkani people to get organized in working for the cause of language, culture, literature, and people. It is only the Kharvi Konkani community that has retained all its cultural arts even today. Fire dance, which is a rare and popular art, is now practiced only by this community, he said.
Konkani is being taught in the schools of Karnataka with the chief objective of getting Konkani students to study the language. Kharvi expressed the need to set up a Maharashtra Konkani Sahitya Academy as there is a large number of Konkani-speaking people in the metro.
Association president Ramnath Sarang, vice-president Ravi Kharvi Bhatkal, secretary Ganapaty Patel, joint secretary Suresh Pandit, treasurer Das Kharvi, committee members Udaya Kharvi, Jaganath Nayak, Ashok Gangolli, Pramod Sarang, Narendra Pandit, K C Naik, Prakash Sarant, and Shankar Kharvi, were also present on the occasion.
Jagjeevan Nayak presided over the felicitation programme. Ganshyam Mestri, representing the Sri Krishna Commission, was the chief guest on the occasion. Ramnath Sarang felicitated Kharvi.
