Bengaluru: CM burdened common man with hike in fuel prices – Yeddyurappa on budget

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (DC)

Bengaluru, Jul 5: B S Yeddyurappa, opposition leader in the assembly slammed Congress-JD(S) coalition government's budget and said that CM H D Kumaraswamy had cheated the farmers.

Speaking to media persons soon after Kumaraswamy presented his maiden budget, Yeddyurappa said, "North Karnataka, Malnad and coastal Karnataka have been completely ignored in the budget. Kumaraswamy has cheated the farmers. This is a budget of younger brother and elder brother. Kumaraswamy has burdened common man by hiking fuel prices,"

"The coalition government should feel ashamed of this budget. It should be ashamed of telling lies to the people. It is a betrayal. Is this why you have been made the chief minister? We will discuss the budget as well as our further course of action on July 12,” he added.

BJP leader R Ashok too lambasted HDK's budget. "There is no mention about fixing the potholes in Bengaluru, and no mention of Kolar and coastal region either. Petrol and power prices have been hiked which will increase the burden on the poor. It is not at all a people-friendly budget. We are going to protest,"

Former CM and BJP leader Jagadish Shettar reacted soon after the budget presentation and said, "Allocation for various important sectors like urban development, irrigation and others have been reduced, instead, there is hike on petrol,"

Earlier, in a big relief to the farm sector, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday announced a mega Rs 34,000 crore farm loan waiver scheme in the maiden budget of the Congress-JDS coalition government. With the waiver scheme imposing a huge burden on the exchequer, he also announced proposals to mop up additional resources, including an increase in the rate of tax on petrol by Rs 1.14 per litre and diesel by Rs 1.12 per litre.

He also proposed a hike in the additional excise duty on Indian-made liquor by 4 per cent across the board on all 18 slabs. Kumaraswamy recalled his assurance to waive all types of crop loans of farmers taken for agricultural activities within 24 hours of formation of a full-fledged government.

Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy said that it was a misconception that the budget is limited for Hassan. “All the programmes implemented by former chief minister Siddaramaiah will continue. This budget will benefit all the masses," he said.

In 2008, as crude oil prices skyrocketed to $147 per barrel, there was intense debate on how to share the burden of increasing oil import costs. Though petrol and diesel prices were significantly higher in the international market, they were based on freezing oil prices at $70/b by the UPA.

Currently, with crude oil at $80/b and petrol prices slightly above the highs reached in 2013, the NDA government is under intense pressure to cut fuel prices.

In 2008, petrol prices fluctuated between Rs 45 and Rs 50 per litre and in 2018, they have fluctuated between Rs 70 and Rs 78 so far. In the light of this, questions before the government include: Why are prices “high” when international prices have fallen from $147 to $80 per barrel? Why have consumers not benefited because of lower oil prices?

Under the UPA administration, when crude oil prices averaged $132 per barrel in July 2008 (it was during that month Brent reached a historic high of $147/b) petrol price was just Rs 50.62 per litre.

Now, when oil price is around $80/b, petrol price on May 28 has reached a high of Rs 78.27 per litre in Delhi. On the surface, it looks like Narendra Modi has been citizen-unfriendly.

How much does a liter of petrol cost?
    To Refinery 35.12/ltr
Price to dealers from Refinery Rs36.19/ltr
    Excise Duty Rs.19.48/ltr
    Dealer Margin Rs.3.61/ltr
    VAT Rs.16/ltr(Delhi)
Retail Price at the pump in Delhi 75.28/ltr
If you calculate the excise duty that the centre charges, the VAT charged by the state and the dealers’ margins, the consumer ends up paying 108 percent more than what a litre of petrol is actually offered to dealers at.
While the NDA succeeded in collecting additional revenues of Rs 4.4 trillions during its four year rule.Excise duty and additional taxes are estimated to fetch the government about 2.5 trillion rupees in the year ending March 2019.
Why Yeddyurappa don't question PM Modi's Finance Minister bringing Petroleum under GST or passing the benefit to the citizens ?

    Dear Aubb,
Your knowledge on petrol prices is not up to date.
Of the price paid for a litre of petrol, state VAT is already in the range of 35~46% depending on the state. Blaming Modi will not help as the price is now decided by the oil companies based on the international oil prices. If HDK raises 1.25 rupees, it is his decision and has nothing to do with Central Govt. He is charging normal people for more Indira canteens and he is not even waiving of half of farmer loan. So it is day light robbery because, Indira canteen is the direct way of looting Karnataka coffers.
So, your blind hatred towards to Modil clearly has vested interest as it ignores facts.

What facts are you talking about? What ever you commented looks like work of fiction from your own imagination. State and Central excise duty are taxes taken by the respective govts for their own schemes. Now what oil companies are deciding is for their benefits but when the prices of crude oil where as low as 42 dollors per barrel, why was the benefit of the low international prices given to the citizens of India. That is not the work of oil companies but the job of the govt of India & the person who is heading the govt is the one who will be blamed for failures and loot created by them. PM is not only to take credit.

Your in the Feku team....... BJP leaders were telling when congress was in centre that when international market petrol rate was 125 dollars and previous government rate was 70 rs per litre. BJP leaders were telling this government is killing poor people and if we are elected we will sell petrol for RS 36 per litre.
Now in international market the rate is US$70 and petrol price is 70 RS and when some reporter asked the BJP leader and he started giving the reason that they are charging more rate and the profit they are using for development...... These people will change their statement whenever it is convenient. The people like you are supporting parties only on the basis of religion without studying the facts.

its been a game with giving waivers on loans for votes and then passing the burden to regular tax payers

this budget will only benefit the parlementarians not anyone else , we wasted a day voting.

Fuel price hiked by the state government by increasing tax on Petrol & Diesel, Some farmers took the loan but now all the farmers have to suffer bacause all of them use fuel for water pumps. Some farmers benefited, but burden for all including the benfited ones.
I would have appreciated if the politicians gave up their 5% of wealth which they acquired by corrupt means to waive off farmer loans, no need to increase the rates of all commodities. If 5% of politicians give their 5% of wealth accumulated through corrupt means we can waive off loans not only farmers but all.

Why we allow Politicians to amass the wealth and we continue to vote them ? Its not something wrong with the system but the fault lies within us.
We are very sensitive when it comes to caste/creed /religion, but when delivery/development/transparency, then we close our eyes and once in a while make big noise for small time and later forget everything and they are called Indians.

Your Yeddy only spoiled the budget. He was playing politics only.... He announced Loan waver of farmers when he took over as CM for only one day.... Now in new budget Kumaraswamy was not having option that he will delay loan waver as your yeddy already announced. Now to pay this loan amount he has to increase the taxes of common people..... these politicians are playing with the common people only for their vote politics and people like you will support on the basis of religion, or party.
