Bengaluru, July 6: Karnataka deputy chief minister Dr G Parameshwara has said the state government will take a decision on implementation of the legislation on granting reservation in promotions to government servants belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC, ST) will be taken soon.

He promised to take up the issue with chief minister H D Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Addressing a meeting of the members of the State Legislative Assembly and Council as well as Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members of the Congress party, he said the matter pertaining to reservation in promotions to government servants belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes would come up before the Supreme Court next week.

He asked social welfare minister Priyank Kharge to hold a detailed discussion with the State’s Advocate General on the State Government’s stand in the apex court.

Dr Parameshwara, who is also holding charge of Home and Bengaluru development portfolios, said the state government would implement the law on reservation in promotions to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and would not allow any setbacks.

He mentioned that he had advised the constitution of an expert committee on the issue. A proposal to constitute a cabinet sub-committee on the steps to be taken for the benefit of Backward Classes has also been submitted.

The Deputy Chief Minister suggested that the legislators and MPs belonging to SC/STs must meet regularly and maintain unity to espouse and protect the interests of the community. "We can be stronger and fight for our rights if we are united,’’ he said.

Dr Parameshwara, who is the first person from the Scheduled Castes to become the deputy chief minister of the state, said a senior and most intelligent leader like late B Basavalingappa did not get opportunities to reach top position. A most experienced veteran leader like Mallikarjuna Kharge could not even become a deputy chief minister.

Pointing out that Dalits were not even allowed to sit in a chair, he said people from the community have the necessary ability and talent to occupy top posts. He also suggested that steps must be taken to encourage more and more talented youngsters from among the SC/STs to appear and pass the IAS and KAS examinations to occupy responsible positions in the administration.
