Kasargod, Jul 9: Five people died and seven other seriously injured in a tragic accident between a lorry and a jeep which took place on the national highway at Uppala Naya Bazar in the early hours of Monday, July 9.
The deceased have been identified as Bhipathimma (65), Asma (30) Naseema (38), Mustak (41) and Imtiaz (35) who belonged from Thalapady KC Road, Ajithidakka. While four died on the spot, one succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The injured are being treated at a hospital in Mangaluru.
The jeep was on its way towards Mangaluru after visiting Palakkad for a house inauguration function, while the lorry was going to Kasargod to transport goods.
The jeep was badly damaged in the accident. Investigation by the police revealed that a burst-tyre suffered by the lorry led to the accident. Losing control, it rammed into the oncoming jeep. Traffic was disrupted on the national highway after the accident.
Manjeshwar police, fire-fighters and locals joined together to shift the dead and injured to the hospital and resumed traffic to normal.
