Rape case filed against another Orthodox church priest in Kerala, crime branch to probe

Kochi, Jul 10 (NIE): A rape case against a priest belonging to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has been filed in Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district of Kerala. The complainant, a married woman of two children, alleges that the priest in question, Binu George who was in the Mavelikara diocese of the church at the time, raped her inside the church office in Koipally in 2014 after calling her to solve a family matter. “They spoke for about half-an-hour regarding the family dispute. Then he closed doors and sexually assaulted her,” said a crime branch officer in charge of the investigation.

Police say that the victim approached the church after the incident to post a formal complaint against the priest. After several consultations, he was reportedly transferred to another church in Ranni in another district. But the priest reportedly continued harassing the victim by sending her lewd messages and spreading rumours about her, said the officer.

A case of rape under section 376 (2f) of the IPC has been charged against Fr George and will be investigated by the crime branch of the Kerala Police. It is not clear whether the accused priest is still based in Ranni. The case comes just weeks after another married woman accused four priests belonging to different dioceses of the Orthodox church in Kerala for blackmailing her over a ‘confession’ she made in church and sexually assaulting her over the years. The priests have been booked for rape by the crime branch. The woman’s husband, in an interview to the Indian Express, said he wants the accused priests to be defrocked so that they are made an example of before the community.

Unfortunately we discuss politics when a rape is reported. There are criminals on every walk of life but here Christians and Muslims are happy when hindu is named and Hindus are happy when Christians and Muslims are named. No one really cares about the actual issue at hand. It's not religion or caste. There is something fundamentally wrong with our society and upbringing. Unless we stop the blame game we will not see this as a common enemy. Then again in the particular case it's really difficult to take the woman's word for it. Needs thorough investigation. On one hand the rape laws are helpful for women but it's also got huge scope for misuse. It's said the after Nirbhaya case the fake rape charges on Delhi have gone up from 50 to 75%. Women with proven fake complaints should face serious jail time.

Need to take elders of the church in to task as some of them tried to cover up the story.
Suffered lady should demand a huge amount of compensation from the church.

Everyone who suffered should come further and lodge the complain.

    People,

If rape cases are not reported within 24 hours....they look suspicious unless they have a valid reason for not reporting...

Reporting a rape case after 4 years....does not look good to me...however in this case was reported to Church, they must have investigated case properly, by interviewing both and decided the quantum of punishment if rape was proved...

With stigma associated with rape...mostly rapes are not reported in India...this need to change...

Majority of the priests of all religions are pious and doing great job...only few bad priests get publicity...as they say, dog biting a man is not the news...man biting a dog becomes news...

Did you comment on rapes by Asaram? Did you comment about wife killers Raghupathi Bhat, Yediyurappa etc? No one is above law. Rapists should be punished. If all rapists are going to be punished then more than half of our politicians will be in jail....

    Well said...

Most politicians think they can get away with anything...rape included...need of the hour, catch them and castrate them one by one...no use filing rape charges against them...
