Won't give in easily to India's demand to deport Zakir Naik: Malaysian PM

Kuala Lumpur, Jul 11 (PTI): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Tuesday said his government would not give in easily to India's demand to deport the controversial Muslim preacher Zakir Naik for alleged terror activities and money laundering, according to a media report.

Three days after meeting Naik, wanted in India for alleged terror activities and money laundering, the Malaysian prime minister said his government would always ensure it looked into all factors before responding to any demand, the New Straits Times reported.

"We do not easily follow the demands of others. We must look at all factors before we respond," Mahathir said in his first public remarks on Naik since he met the cleric on Saturday.

"Otherwise, someone will become a victim," the Malaysian Prime Minister said.

Responding to questions on Naik, who has permanent resident status in Malaysia, and India's request to have him extradited, Mahathir said his government would always ensure it looked into all factors before responding to any demand.

Mahathir last week said the cleric would not be handed over to Indian authorities as he had been granted Malaysian permanent resident status. The prime minister said Zakir, who left India in 2016, would be allowed to stay in the country as long as he was not creating any problem.

However, the decision did not sit well with several groups, who insisted the government return Zakir to India following his alleged tendency to make racial and religiously insensitive statements, the report said.

India had made a formal extradition request to Malaysia for Naik's deportation after accusing him of inciting youngsters to commit terror activities through his hate speeches. A strategist of Malaysia's ruling Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) had also defended Prime Minister Mahathir's decision not to deport Naik to India, saying doing so would be akin to deporting Uighur Muslims to China. PPBM strategist Rais Hussin said he personally could see no wrong in Naik's activities and speeches.

Deporting him would be akin to deporting Uighur Muslims to China, he had said, referring to China pressing Malaysia for the extradition of 11 Uighur men who entered Malaysia illegally last year after their dramatic escape from a jail in Thailand last year.

Zakir has also accused the media in India of subjecting him to a campaign of vilification over the past two years.

Naik is being probed under terror and money laundering charges by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The NIA had first registered a case against Naik under anti-terror laws in 2016 for allegedly promoting enmity between different religious groups.

Naik is also under investigation for issuing alleged hate speeches that inspired a deadly terror attack on a popular cafe in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh in 2016.

Malaysia is increasingly becoming radicalised. Ask any Chinese, Indian or secular malay living in Malaysia and they will tell you how Malaysia is going down the jihadi cesspit.

Seeing some Muslims comment in support of Zakir Naik shows there are brainwashed radicals lving in our midst. Zakir naik has been banned by four countries including Muslim majority Bangladesh, UK, Canada and of course India.

When you protect dumb religious preachers of any kind over science and rationalism then your country will go back to 7th century Arabia. India also needs to reign in all kind of religious maniacs if it wants to be called a modern developed and science based society.

Turkey is another country turning into jihadi paradise. All the Middle East rulers have supported the coup in turkey recently to oust Islamist PM eradgon from power, but failed. Turkey is the country which supplied fighter jets to Pakistan during the wars in 1960s & 70s. We can never believe any 'peaceful' countries during war like situations.

    Mr. Ballal.
You're a typical cheddi chela. You lack knowledge about the facts.
Zakir naik is accused for nothing. It was a game plan and false propaganda by ur cheddi government to trap and degrade him. A Bangladesh terrorist was a followers of zakir naik . It's totally ridiculous reason to call Mr. Zakir naik a criminal.
    People have become communal minded.
Zakir naik is a popular personality which they dnt digest.
Bangladesh government has banned zakir naik from direct instruction by cheddi government.

Zakir Naik has become a target for chaddi govt only because he is preaching Islam, answering questions posed against Islam and made people understand the facts. when they failed to debate with him on the religious basis and got exposed, they targetted him with fake and ridiculous cases.
I watched his several videos and amazed by his knowledge of every religious scripture.,I never find him taking the side of any kind of terror. He respects everyone who talks to him and answering clearly on basis of their religious scripture instead of his own.

India used to be called peacful country in comparing so many Asian, Arab & African countries. But the situationnow is totally day & night difference.

India do not go for war a deadly war with PAK and tries to maintain peace and stability of the country. What is happening within our countries people by way of lynching, comunal & religious hate speeches, Women living in in security etc. Are you sure that peoples mentality has not deviated from self respect to hatred towards others. Trusst & love has overtaken by suspicion & hatred. Political parties are engaged in blame game and not in the interest of people & country.

As far as the allegations about him provoking several terrorists around are concerned, I don't think it has anything to with Dr. Naik. He is a celebrity preacher & few terrorists may look up to him. The man was actual in favor of Peace- In his speeches & preachings he has always said that those Islamic terrorists are 'not muslims'
Of course one should punish him for degrading all other religions & only uplifting Islam in his preachings!!! "Only Muslims going to Heaven & all others going to Hell" is False statement !
