Saudi woman arrested for hugging singer

Riyadh, Jul 14 (IANS): A woman in Saudi Arabia has been arrested after she ran on stage to hug a male singer during a concert, the media reported.

Singer Majid al-Mohandis was performing at a festival in the western city of Taif on Friday when the woman darted on to the stage, the BBC reported on Saturday. Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to mix in public with men who are unrelated to them.

The police arrested the woman and referred her to the public prosecution to face charges under the law criminalising harassment. "The suspect is held at the Al-Taif Foundation for Women's Care pending investigation," the Mecca police official spokesman said.

Videos posted online showed the woman holding on to Mohandis while security staff tried to pull her off him. Mohandis, whose website calls him "the prince of Arab singing", has not commented on the incident.

The Iraqi-born singer, who also has Saudi citizenship, continued to perform after the incident.

Restrictions that had long been placed on women attending public events in the Kingdom have been relaxed in the past year under a series of reforms by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"Vision 2030", unveiled last year, aims to increase household spending on cultural and entertainment activities in the oil-dependent kingdom from 2.9 per cent to 6 per cent by 2030.

Saudi earlier allowed women to attend a concert and a football match for the first time and the Kingdom also hosted its first concert by a female singer, Lebanese star Hiba Tawaji, in December. Women were also allowed to drive from last month.

But significant restrictions remain in place and women still have to adhere to strict dress codes. The unnamed women seen hugging Mohandis was wearing a naqab, a head dress that shows only the eyes.

Expression of love and affection in public is banned in India too. Richard Gere was haunted by police for a peck on the cheek of Shilpa Shetty. It was a big new all over the world. People think India is no different than Saudi as far as hugging and kissing in public. The only difference is that Saudi does not have Red Light areas I believe.

Not only Saudi but Islam does not allow to mingle. Islam does not change according to modern society.. Everything is very clear in Islam. From the beginning since it may lead to something else at the end same like alcohol.

People comment very casual, when it comes to their own daughter, sister or mother then view point would be different. Capital punishment for rape (As per Islam) looks inhuman for majority of viewers. If rape victim is their sister or mother then Sharia rule is correct ?????

While I respect the principles and teachings of Islam, I still feel from a humanitarian level "All Humans are Equal" and should have freedom to decide what they want to do, eat, drink etc. Also I strongly believe Saudi should change and move forward in these times and accept equality. I see the evolution in the practices now and that's a positive thing like women driving, screening movies etc. I totally disagree that you should provide capital punishment for natural reactions like feeling excited and hugging someone they adore or give them 50 lashes etc. And do not use the argument of mother, daughter, sister or whatever. That doesnt work in favour of your argument, as it falls flat when you are allowed to marry multiple times.

I live in London and see Muslim women being treated equally in all aspects by the men. Why can't Saudi Arabia? Inshallah, things will change for the better.
