Bhatkal, Oct 9: While the police department has branded Riaz Bhatkal as one of the main terror suspects and levelled various allegations against him, speaking to a television channel, his mother refuted them. She continues to say that her son is innocent.
"Our son too has been facing lot of mental agony in addition to us, because of false allegations being heaped against him. I fully believe that my son is innocent and not involved with any anti-social activities. The terrorism charges being cast upon him are totally baseless and a bundle of lies," she said.
In an interview given to 'Aaj Tak' Hindi television channel, Riaz's mother charged the policemen and the politicians of indulging in mud-slinging and slander against her son unnecessarily, with the sole motive of defaming the Muslims.
Answering questions raised by the channel, she said, her family would have been staying in a palatial bungalow, if Riaz actually had connections with the mafia, as reported by the media. "We need not have stayed in this tiny house. Riaz has been evading the policemen since the last three to four years, and we all are yearning to see him and concerned about his well-being," she explained.
She held the policemen and some politicians as responsible for trying to project Islam in bad light by trying to frame highly educated Muslim youth. "Even the college students are being taken into custody on charges having connections with the terrorists," she alleged.
Deputy superintendent of police Dr Vedamurthy, in reply to questions, confirmed that the policemen have been keenly watching the developments and are keeping a vigil on big bungalows located on the Bhatkal coast. Every stranger visiting the region is being observed, he confirmed.
Several Muslims interviewed by the channel too firmly believed that the nexus of the politicians and the policemen is apparent from the fact that all cases of bomb blasts are linked with the Muslims and that Muslims are unnecessarily being tortured in the name of investigations.
