Panaji, Oct 9: Two waiters and a security guard were arrested on Thursday October 9 for allegedly beating up 65-year-old Australian national on Wednesday October 8 who later died while being treated at a hospital, police said.
Manak Basak (32), Jagat Pradhan (23) and Jaykrishna Das (25) were arrested by Calangute police under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code holding them responsible for the death of John Kelly, an Australian who was severely injured during a pub brawl with the accused.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at 6,.30 am when the Australian national had an altercation with the waiters. Police stated that the verbal fight over 'style of serving beer.'
Police inspector Tushar Vernekar confirmed that they received the information about the fight at 8 am which was registered in the station diary. "We had sent a beat constable to the spot. But by that time, the foreigner had already left," the police inspector stated.
The Australian reportedly went back to his guest house at Candolim, five kilometres away from the spot, from where he was shifted to the Goa Medical college and hospital.
"He arrived here at 9.30 am. He went to the room and fell on the floor. I called the ambulance and he was shifted," Jose Philip Vaz, a guest house owner said.
Police stated that the Australian after the brawl 'disappeared'. "He was not traceable and we located him only at 1.30 in the afternoon when we received wireless message from the hospital," Vernekar, who is investigating the case, said.
The Australian died at 6 pm while being treated in the hospital following which the police registered case of murder against the accused.
In the meantime, police had rounded up entire pub staff for the questioning.
Superintendent of police Bosco George said that the police have registered a case of murder and further investigations are on.
