Kundapur, Aug 4: Forest officials, under the guidance of Forest Officer Sharath, in a three-day long operation, trapped a leopard which was making its appearance every now and then during the last six months in Kundapur.

The three year old male leopard was trapped in the cage kept at plot in Tolar near Maladi Nandikeshwara temple on Saturday, August 4.

It is said that the leopard was spotted by several people here. However, other locals did not believe them. Therefore, some people complained to forest officials. A goat was tied in a cage under directions from Sharath and kept near Nandikeshwara temple. But the leopard did not enter the cage. Finally, a dog was tied instead of the goat. The leopard was trapped late in the night. People saw the animal trapped on Saturday morning.

Locals gathered to see the leopard soon after the news spread. Kuvempu School and Seva Sangama students were allowed to see it. The animal was taken to Mookambika sanctuary later where it was released.

Life has gone full circle. Our ancestors used to talk about leopards, tigers and other wild animals in and around the present Mangalore city and all over the district. Later on with expanding human habitation and depletion of forest cover, the wild animals vanished. Now they are back again invading human habitation looking for food. It is time to develop more sanctuaries and reserved areas for animals to thrive, or else human life will be at risk from attacks and we may come across frequent casualties.

I find sometimes why forest officials are doing this.First bring wild animals in forests where human living areas, and later when people complain of attacks to them and their animals collect and take away to set free in another area. What is the idea behind this.when they set free wild animals in a forest, see that they have other means to catch animals like wild pigs or deer, etc.certainly when they dont find anything come to the village ,attack normal dogs ,cattles even humans. That find is simply time passing for forest officrs .and danger to children and humans.
