Mangaluru: Assault on two fishermen at old port dock - four get RI

Mangaluru, Aug 24: In connection with the attack on two fishermen and robbing them seven years back at the dock in the old port area here, the fourth additional district and sessions court has delivered judgement, sentencing all the four accused to two years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) each. The court also imposed fine of Rs 15,000 on each of the accused. If they fail to pay fine, they will have to undergo six additional months of imprisonment each.

Those who were found guilty and sentenced happen to be Isaac alias Muhammed Isaac (30) from Kudroli, Zubair (26), Naufal (29) and Muhammed Muktasir alias Mutta (28), also from Kudroli. Edison (42), from Ramanathauram district, Tamil Nadu, and Parameshwar (47) from Mavattam in Theni district were the injured complainants in the case.

Edison and Parameshwar were standing in the old port dock here on October 26, 2011 with rope in hand for anchoring their boats there, when the above four accused had attacked them. It is said that Isaac injured the left knee of Parameshwar with a sickle and robbed Rs 260 from him. Zubair, who hit the right leg of Edison with an iron road had robbed Rs 500 from him. Accused Naufal had attacked the two with wooden cudgel while Muhammed Muktasir had hit them with his hands, it was alleged. The injured were treated in a private hospital in the city for their injuries.

The then inspector of Pandeshwar police station, C N Diwakar, had registered a case and filed charge sheet in the court.

Judge of the fourth additional district and sessions court here, Nerale Veerabhadraiah Bhavani, who conducted hearing in the case , came to the conclusion that the allegations made against the accused have been proved. In the judgement delivered on Thursday, he ordered Rs 50,000 out of the fine collected to be paid to Parameshwar who suffered serious injuries in the incident, and the balance to the government.

Public prosecutor, Harishchandra Udyavar, appeared in this case on behalf of the prosecution.
