Udupi: Incomplete national highway work - symbolic protests at tollgates on Sept 20

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Aug 24: It has been decided to hold symbolic protests at all the four tollgates functioning in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district from 8 am to 12 pm on September 20. The protestors will be demanding to complete all pending national highway work at the earliest. They will also be seeking to stop collection of toll charges if the works are not completed.

President of National Highway Agitation Committee, Dr Deviprasad Shetty, informed that a decision to this effect was taken at a special meeting of the committee held at Padubidri on Thursday August 23.

"During the highway widening work, bridges have not been built at several places. Service roads have not been provided. A number of road bend works have been unscientific. Connectivity to internal roads has not been proper. Bus stands are of substandard quality. Street light system has not been in order. We will file public interest litigation against Navayuga Company, which has obtained contract for the highway widening work, in the high court," Shetty warned. He also demanded the concerned to refrain from collecting toll charges from local vehicles.

Kaup Divakar Shetty said that an agitation would be launched if toll is collected from local vehicles. President of Kaup block Congress Committee, Naveen Chandra J Shetty, pointed out to Hejamady tollgate as an example for unscientific work.

Convener of the committee, Shekhar Hejamady, Pratap Shetty h, Prakash Shetty Padebettu, president of Mulky Tourist Car Owners Association, Madhu Acharya, and several other dignitaries were present.

Just before the state elections they made an effort to show that works were on, now back again to usual pathetic pace.. works going on for almost a little less than a decade now. The contractors must be taken to court and sued..!

I agree fully with the agitators.
When we buy a vehicle,we pay a substantial amount towards road tax. Can someone tell me the logic behind collecting this tax? Well, I think it should be for using the roads to drive the vehicle.
Now, some private company is allotted the work of building these roads. The government also supports these companies by providing loans thru banks, which is public money.
Even before 75% of the work is completed, these companies start collecting toll. And even after paying toll charges, we are forced to drive on pot hole ridden roads. And in some cases, the toll gate itself is ridden with pot holes.
Now, I fail to understand, which of the 2 are legitimate; Road tax or toll? If I have paid road tax for using the roads, why should I be paying toll. And if I have to pay toll and drive on pot hole ridden roads, why I should pay road tax?

Where is the sanctity of Tender if work delayed for years and time limit is not followed by bribing the concerned? We are "brilliant" people only tolerating this kind of scrawling works and our fate to see the incomplete road and flyovers in dakshina kannada. All over India highway works were completed with all related amenities.

    Imagine..
after cutting down thousands of age old trees, at least it should have been a smooth drive along the coastline. with scenic beauty of Tulunadu sacrificing the environment should have been less painful.

And now this dusty, bumpy and shabby looking highway is a sad reminder of our "chaltha hai attutude" towards our nature and nation.
This agitation should be supported in whatever ways possible !!
