Sullia, Aug 24: The managing committee of the famous temple of Kukke Subramanya, Thursday, August 23, donated an amount of Rs 3 crore to the chief minister's relief fund as aid to the flood-affected victims of Kodagu district.

Nityananda Mundodi, chairman of the temple managing committee handed over the cheque for the said amount to manager of Vijaya Bank, Subramanya branch. Giving the information on the occasion Nityananda said that the amount will be finally transferred to the Muzrai department account through RTGS.

Nityananda said that the committee had decided to donate an amount of Rs 2 crore for the purpose. However, the amount was increased as per the orders of the government, which said that the temples coming under the Muzrai department have to pay Rs 3 crore for the aid of the victims of the flood at Kodagu.

Madikeri: 42 acres of land earmarked for victims of flood - U T Khader

"42 acres of land in various parts of Madikeri and Somwarpet taluks is earmarked for building model houses for the victims of recent flood and landslides in the district of Kodagu. The building of houses will be done as soon as possible using the latest technology," said U T Khader, minister for housing and urban development.

Khader was speaking at the press conference. Giving more details, the minister said, "Already 42 acres of land is identified at K Nidugane, First Monnangeri and Karnanageri villages of Madikeri taluk and Tarkeri village of Somwarpert taluk to build homes for the flood victims. Information is being sought from every panchayat with regards to the government land that is available. In the coming days, ideal sites will be identified and suitable houses will be built for those who have lost their houses in the calamity,"

"M K Jagadish is appointed as the additional deputy commissioner for the sole purpose of identifying and verifying the ideal spots for this cause in the district of Kodagu. It is not possible to do everything overnight. However, the government is determined to build the homes for the victims of the flood at an extremely fast pace," he added.

"A strict regulation will be brought with regards to building homes in hills in order to avoid the scale of the disaster in future. The government is mooting of implementing a law with regards to the construction of buildings," he said.

Khader further said, "Around 1120 houses have got damaged in the natural calamity in Kodagu. Out of this, 186 houses are completely destroyed. A clear picture will emerge with regards to the people who have lost their houses after getting the list of names of the homeless people. Houses for 16 people, residents of Cauvery River basin, who have lost their houses, will be built in Kushalnagar."
