Madikeri: Nirmala Sitharaman visits flood-hit Kodagu, promises Army help

Madikeri, Aug 24 (IANS): Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday visited the flood-hit Kodagu district and assured the people of Indian Army's help in rebuilding the devastated region's roads.

"I can assure you that the task force of the Indian Army's Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will visit as consultants and advise the administration on how to build roads in hilly areas," Sitharaman told reporters in Madikeri, about 280km from the state capital Bengaluru.

Due to heavy rains and landslips, several of the district's arterial roads have been battered, disconnecting many villages and towns.

The Defence Minister visited Kushalnagar and Madapura in the district, which were severely affected by heavy rains and flash floods last week.

She also interacted with few flood-affected people sheltered at a relief camp at Madikeri in the district.

"I will meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who also takes care of national disaster relief funding, (Minister for Road Transport and Highways) Nitin Gadkari and also submit a report to Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) on the district's situation," Sitharaman said.

The Minister, who is an MP from Karnataka, said the Centre's financial aid to the region in distress will be decided after an assessment of the loss.

According to preliminary estimates, the district has suffered losses worth Rs 1,140 crore to public and private property as a result of the rains, said Kodagu Deputy Commissioner P. Sreevidya.

"At least 34 village panchayats have been badly affected and the municipalities in Kushalnagar and Madapura suffered heavy losses as they are in the catchment area of Harangi river," she said.

The district administration is also working on providing temporary shelters to those affected by floods and residing in relief camps.

"We have identified land and an additional deputy commissioner rank officer will oversee the rehabilitation," Sreevidya added.

About 75 Army engineering task force personnel will also be assisting the district officials in restoring the critical roads of the district, the state's Relief Commissioner Gangaram Baderiya said in a statement earlier.

About 5,000 people are currently sheltered in 51 relief camps across the district, with more than 1,100 houses have been destroyed in floods and landslips.

An MP from Karnataka she behaved very arrogantly with the Minister in Charge and the DC of KODAGU .She must show the same with the Chinese who have occupied DOKLAM. What Coorgies want is help to rebuild homes devastated by rain not arrogance.

Madam...go back to Delhi. You came too early. Our armed forces did not wait to hear from you but were on the site, the moment disaster hit Kerala. In fact, they did a yeoman work and are now back in their barracks. Why are you asking them to come and help? Just because you can command them? Use your command where it matters and not where it is NOT needed. Seems like BJP knows where to light fire (when not needed) and put off the fire (when it is really needed). one word DISGUSTING!

hEY JK why your beloved PM ignored the donations from UAE where he was there in their country even they offered to build a temple which is not as per the norms of the country. We are not opposing anybody here but we oppose personal ego which is become hurdle of developments of our country. Though sitaraman is good minister we are not asking her favour to do we need to ask our fundamental rights. Your modi or nirmal is not doing any favour to the country they are representing us and they should perform as our representative not to divide the country according to the which is ruling the states or religion or cast and creed. Personal worship should be stopped then only these country progressed! during the turmoil one minister was throwing biscuits on people ! JK they are not beggers they are citizen of this country ! Country is not build by nirmal or Modi this was a collective effort by every citizen of this country and we got constitutional rights to live with or without beef eating.

We have seen Personal worship of a single family since Independence... People are not fools.... I know those people who lost everything in flood are not beggers.... GOVT is not keeping quite.... Why you say that ? If any minister visit to see the flood affected area and see the arrangements etc done by NDRF and Army why you are bothered... Abdul Kalam also visited Borders, A K Antony also visited Borders and George Fernandese also visited borders when they were holding office in Central govt... It is the duty of every minister to visit and see the loss to people.... Providing all sorts of support and shelters, food etc is not like giving alms - as you call begging... It is the duty of the Govt to protect them... Begging/Bribing/Commmission on deals are all pioneered by one family party and still today people hang to these stupids for earning their livelyhood.. Modi or Def minister or any Ministers of central govt never said that they are doing favour to victims of this calamity... It is the thought arised from idle mind - AS we say IDLE mind is Devils paradise - Contry is not build by Mod/Nirmala/Nehru or Rahul..... It is built by dedicated thougts, liberal mind set and Leadeship that takes our country to prosperity..... 3 yrs rule itself tells the way Central govt worked for this Nation.....and people of this country have changed their minds and also understood how they are ditched by caste politics..
