Mangaluru: Democracy? SDPI identifies women candidates through male family members

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 25: In a bizarre case, a political party in Mangaluru still prefers to identify its women candidates through the identity of their male relatives.

The Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has fielded nine candidates to contest in the upcoming Ullal City Municipality Council election. Of the nine, four seats are reserved for women candidates. Though the party fielded four women – Rukhiya Banu from Kotepura ward, Shehnaz Akram Hasan from Ullal Kodi, Kamarunnisa Nizam from Melangadi and Zarina Babu Rauf from Halekote ward, the publicity material does not carry their picture. Instead, the photographs of their spouse or male family members have been used to identify the women.

The publicity material shows two blocks meant for pictures. Wherever a woman is contesting, the block meant to showcase the candidate’s picture is kept empty. Instead, there is a separate block in the side which showcases the picture of the woman candidate’s male family member.

A total of 250 candidates are contesting in the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections in Dakshina Kannada. The polls are scheduled to be held on August 31. In Ullal CMC, there are 31 wards and 102 candidates in fray. In Bantwal TMC there are 27 wards and 71 candidates and in Puttur CMC there are 31 wards and 77 candidates in fray.

In Ullal CMC there are 43 polling booths of which 18 are hypersensitive and 11 are sensitive booths.

If these women candidates are scared to show their face, how they will serve the constituency if at all elected. Men should meet their husbands first. This is ridiculous. Request the Election commission, to ban this type of Taliban type approach. Even in the middle east, the women show their face by wearing hizab.

They do no want thier picture to be in publicity pamphlets, that it.

You can meet them in personally at SDPI Office, there are available . You look more interested in faces than the development or work.

First try to learn aphabet and then learn words. If the women refuse to show their faces, better not to come to pubic life. if they are so scared to show their faces, then how come one can trust them in development works. Why the voters has to visit SDPI office. Let the candidates sit at home or in SDPI office only, not in public offices. Typical Taliban culture.

Being a Hindu with proud I can say... Majority of Hindus are not communal... We can find lot of progressive Hindu brothers... Who are called intellectual... Who criticise these type of things if it exists in our religion... May be other types of practices where these ppl oppose...

But in Islam. You can't find intellectual ppl.. For them What is written in book that is final.

We can find a progressive Hindu brother eating cow meat and criticising Our scriptures, when some wrong things are mentioned....
But we can't find a progressive Muslim.

Just see... How ppl are supporting the SDPI move... If they can't show their face means why are they contesting elections... How will they mingle in society after they win.. How will they face men's when they come to them to get their ward work done...
Shame on the ppl Who support them...

    Dear,

Its not a book, its Holy Quran.

we need not criticize our scriptures because it is perfectly drafted for whole mankind,

There is no scope for even 0.1% n holy quran, so there is no question of critisizing.

    FYI,

SDPI has already many female elected representatives all over india and they are serving thier wards without any issues, no one is desperate to see thier faces, people are concerned with work, not faces.

Our Development work is our candidates face and mirror.

Ullal is traditional Region and here since long past years there is a tradition of Muslim women candidates not displaying their picture in publicity pamphlets, they themselves do not want to get it published for personal reasons. Even congress candidates haven't published the picture of Muslim women candidates in Ullal region, they have put up an imaginary image of women.

I do not see anything wrong in women not wanting to put up their images in publicity pamphlet, it depends on individual while it is good to see thier husbands taking initiative to support thier wives contesting in the elections.

And hope you are aware about nomination process and B form which party issues, candidate have to enclose thier photographs in the form as well as they have to submit additional hard copies of the photographs, so dont worry any Burkha wearing women cannot claim to be representative.
