Mangaluru: Landslide at Yedakumeri - Bengaluru train services resumption postponed

Mangaluru, Aug 29: On Tuesday August 28, landslide happened again at a spot between Sakleshpur and Subramanya railway stations, and huge quantity of earth and stones got deposited on the railway tracks between the city and Bengaluru. Therefore, the hopes of commuters on this line about resumption of train services between the city and Bengaluru via Hassan have been dashed.

On Monday, landslide had happened between Kodagaravalli and Yedakumeri stations. On Tuesday, another landslide happened. In these two incidents, a total of 75,000 cubic metres of earth has formed two huge heaps on the railway tracks, said chief public relations officer of south western railway, E Vijaya.

As per the current estimate, the repair work might be completed by September 10. Railway traffic till August 31 on this road had been banned till August 31 on these tracks because of repeated landslides. On account of landslides, the four-days a week train between the city and Bengaluru via Shravanabelagola and the three days a week train via Mysuru and the Karwar-Kannur train have been moving via Kerala, taking a long detour.

    Just the beginning or an early warning to bring some alertness in the mind of people responsible.
    Even after repair there is no guarantee that landslides would not take place. Too dangerous to travel on these tracks in the monsoon times. Tracks are laid cutting the mountains where by the earth has lost the firmness or grip and creates landslides in heavy rains and this time it was torrential rains.
    can we think of digging tunnels ?

    No political party is able to provide a decent link between major cities like Mangalore and Bangalore. If there is a 8 hour train between these two cities....life of our state commuters would have been lot better. It is a great shame. Our MPs are useless so also the two recent central Railway ministers from Karnataka proved themselves to be spineless!! One smiled all the way without any reason to show victory!!
    We need a dictator from Karnataka to fix it! I am sure a person like Sorake or JR Lobo will make it happen in short span, they know how to get the work done given a chance!!
