Rahul Gandhi asks Arun Jaitley to step down over Mallya's met-FM comment

New Delhi, Sep 13(India Today): Reacting to Vijay Mallya's comment that he met Arun Jaitley before leaving India, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said that PM Narendra Modi should launch an independent probe into the matter.

"Given Vijay Mallya's extremely serious allegations in London today, the PM should immediately order an independent probe into the matter. Arun Jaitley should step down as FInance Minister while this probe is underway," Gandhi said in a tweet.

Vijay Mallya has earlier said that he had met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley before leaving India. Mallya's comment blew up politically with the Congress using the revelation to target the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Mallya was speaking to the media in London where the hearing of his extradition case was underway in the Westminster Court.

Mallya later clarified that there was not formal meeting.

Rubbishing Mallya's claim, Arun Jaitley said that the beleagured businessman's remark was factually incorrect.

Jaitley said that Mallya used his privilege as a Rajya Sabha member and accosted him in the corridor of the Parliament. Jaitley said that he never formally met Mallya.

Later, Mallya clarified his statement and said that he never met Arun Jaitley formally. He said he met the finance minister at several occasions when he was a member of the Rajya Sabha, but never met him formally. Mallya said that the statement was blown out of proportion by the media.

Vijay Mallya also said that he met many of his Rajya Sabha colleagues and expressed desire to settle accounts. He also said that nobody tipped him off before leaving for London.

RaGa 'tax evasion' of 2011-2012 has come up. He and his mom have been summoned . His Herald case has woken up again. His party is at the receiving end due to no candle light protest for the the poor ' nun rape ' case in Kerala, where Cong is supporting the rapist Bishop. There are issues in Amethi where its touted he is goin to lose and suggest to look for a better pasture. So to ensure the public mind is diverted, he is coming up with such non sencial comments that will be in the peoples mind for 2-3 days. Its high time you step down from Cong before you take it to the grave.

Nonsensical comments that'll be in people's mind only for 2 - 3 days? Well, I reckon the situation is much graver than that, for PM wouldn't have called for an emergency meeting in two days otherwise. National Herald case being sub judice at the moment there's no point in diverting anyone's attention.

RaGa raising a non extent issue. Why does he not drag Jaitley to the court , like Subramanya Swamy did for RaGA. Or is this just a ploy by Cong to deviate public attention on the 'nun rape' case thats boiling in Kerala, where a secular Govt is ruling. ??

    Ananta,

Why Jootley did not remember the meet-in-the-corridor till Mallya exposed it ? Whom to believe now ? That Mallya said he had a meeting, or that Jootley said that he said 'Hello to the 'soon-to-flee' fugitive' in the corridor ?

Look, we Indians remember that Mallya was give free passing (without frisking) with a dozen suit cases in the tow because he was BJP RS member. Who knows how much crores of currency was smuggled outside the country by him at that time ?

Do you want us Indians to believe that Mallya fled without blessings from BJP ?
