Kerala activist, on hunger strike for arrest of Bishop Mulakkal, hospitalised

Kochi, Sep 16(PTI): Social activist Stephen Mathew, who has been on a hunger strike for the past nine days demanding the arrest of rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal, was hospitalised on Sunday after his health deteriorated.

Franco Mulakkal, a 54-year-old Roman Catholic Bishop, has been accused by a Kerala nun of raping her several times between 2014 and 2016. She has also sought help from the Vatican in this regard.

On Saturday, Aloshi Joseph, a member of the Catholic Reformation Movement had joined Stephen Mathew in the indefinite hunger strike demanding the arrest of Bishop Mulakkal.

On the same day, the Bishop stepped down, handing over charge of the Jalandhar diocese to Father Joseph Thekkumkattil and Father Subin Thekkedathu. He has been summoned for questioning by the police on September 19 and is expected to head towards Kerala soon.

Nuns from the Joint Christian Council to which Mathew belongs have been protesting as they seek justice for the victim. They had staged a sit-in protest at the High Court Junction bus station in Kochi to demand that the Bishop be arrested.

When the case is being investigated by a team of senior officers of the Kerala Police and with the High Court Monitoring the case and recently expressing satisfaction with the progress of the investigation, The pressure tactics resorted by the Nuns and these so called activists encouraged by the media is a blot to the inteliigence and litracy of the keralite people.

These activists and Nuns in the protest drama appear to be pawns being used by by diabolical forces that want to attack the Church in Kerala.

There will be proper non-biased investigation of Bishop Mulakkal. There have been few/ seldom cases all over the world similar to the case of Bishop Mulakkal, they have been resolved as per the facts. One person, few people or activist group(s) cannot decide the fate of Universal Church. Stephen Mathew is nobody to decide this case...

When do you think there will be fair, proper unbiased investigation? This case should have been settled by now? What do you think should be done when the nun’s superior general, the Vatican and the state police had turned deaf ears to her complaint? That shameless MLA’s unpardonable statement is enough to the measure the influence the bishop enjoys in political circles.
