Mangalore, Nov 4: The Christian missionaries converted the medical profession from state-centric or rich-people-centric to patient-centric in India. Nowadays, the same profession has become doctor-centric where the patients are neglected. Therefore, the modern physicians have the responsibility to convert it again as patient-centric, said Prof Syed Akheel Ahmed, vice-chancellor of Yenepoya University.
Speaking at the inaugural function of ‘Fr Muller Medical College (FMMC) Student Council 2008’ on Tuesday November 4, he said that importance should be given to the patients in the medical field. Only then the prevailing corruption in some of the sections in the medical fields can be eliminated, he opined.
Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions, added that the student unions give the opportunity to learn responsibility. Being a part of it would help one to become responsible physician as well as responsible to the society, he stated.
Meanwhile Dr Akhter Husain, head of department of Orthodontics in Yenepoya Dental College, inaugurated ‘Chakravyuha,’ cultural fest of the college for the year 2008. Dr Sanjeev Rai, dean of FMMC, student council leader Saloni and others were present on the dais.
Fr Denis D’Sa, director of FMMC, administered the oath and welcomed the gathering. Farhan Fazal proposed vote of thanks.
