Mangalore, Nov 5: Prof BM Hegde, retired vice-chancellor, MAHE University said here on Wednesday November 5 that all the educational institutions should introduce value-based education and it is the need of the hour.

Addressing the gathering at the diamond jubilee convention of Bethany Educational Society (BES) held at St Sebastian Church, Bendore, he said, "Unfortunately educational institutions are not doing what they are supposed to do. Students should be taught ethics, especially in primary education. Today teachers are killed by students in America and other developed countries owing to lack of ethics. We should not let such incidents to happen in future through value-based education."

Saying that Bethany has been his second home he asked the teachers to teach universal brotherhood to the students to ensure healthy world.

Lamenting at the prevailing education system, Hegde said teaching and learning is barking up the wrong tree. Teaching is learning and it is not preaching. Knowledge advances by refuting false dogmas. "Technology alone will not make any country live happily. Millions of children's die every year in India owing to lack of nutritious food. Welfare programmes for these children's and other needy people in our country are much required than scientific explorations such as Chandrayan," he opined.

Citing Raj Thakre, Narendra Modi and others he said that the word 'patriotism' is defined wrongly and it is going to ruin this universe. Joining any group or becoming a part of any sect would lead to hate another group.

Sr M Jyothi BS, superior general of BES inaugurated the five-day convention which will conclude on Sunday November 9. Bishop Henry D'Souza of Bellary invoked God's blessings. Fr Peter S Noronha, parish priest, St Sebastean Church Bendore, Fr Cedric Prakash SJ, director, Prashanth, centre for human rights, justice and peace, Ahmedabad were the chief guests on the occasion.

The first ever space venture started with USSRs Sputnik I. It eventually led to Earth-Orbiting Satellites whose usefulness in Remote Sensing, Meteorology, Climatology, etc. are now well established as are their demonstrated benefits to mankind. A moon mission is not akin to firing an earth-based rocket or placing an earth-orbiting satellite in Space. First of all, the Moon is a good 385000 km away from the Earth. Further, the Moon has no Atmosphere and seismically, it is practically dead, although its surface shows evidence of such activity in its remote past.

Considering all this, an obvious question arises: What are the estimated benefits of a lunar project (manned or unmanned) to India in the near future ? If no estimate is possible at the present time, and the estimated or actual cost is enormous (as one could imagine) then, one could legitimately question: Is it reasonable to go ahead with a lunar Space Project (or such a proposal) while there are immediate pressing problems at hand, e.g. feeding the hungry, providing reliable Power supply, safe drinking water, good quality roadways, sanitation, etc.

The ultimate question is : How can a Country which has designs of being a Superpower be called or considered so without first having addressed needs such as those mentioned above ?

Take Governmen's tenor of expenditure as an example. Budget allocations are made towards Education and many other 'regular administration'{the word Deveopment is less appropriate}matters. AT the end of the year all matters of Administration/Education are seen pending since, for preparation of visits of VIPs, flying visits to Delhi and other places by Men in power/bureacrats, preferences had tobe given. These things go on whichever party is in power. Eradication of poverty is only a Mantra.

I disagree in toto, firstly in recent survey worth of corruption in our country in tune of around thousand cores in a single year, and secondly the root problem is population explotion I personally feel need of the hour is to concentrate on above said 2 problems , on the other hand scientific development is much needed to our/any country and in future it would generate huge revenues with the offering of scienticfic services.

There should be political will to curb any thing take for instance the very political parties organise campaigns and rallies so much money is wasted can't that money be utlized for the good cause like helping homeless children and other needy people............

Dear Mr Anthony T D'Souza, I completely agree with you that there are many welfare programme for children and underpriveledged in India, but what proportion of the National Budget is alloted to them? Please remember India is still developing and not yet developed and it can not develop if its own people are neglected and moon is targeted. I had the "privilege of working in the Government Sector, and I know a bit of inside story. Prof has always worked for the betterment of the society and his knowledge and wisdom in this regard, I dont think can be questioned.

It is little bit surprising about Prof BM Hegde’s comments “Welfare programmes for these children's and other needy people in our country are much required than scientific explorations such as Chandrayan,". Prof. Hegde seems now ten steps going back then what he used to be. There should not be any analogy between Welfare progammes for children and the scientific exploration of Chandrayan.

At present no prime welfare programmes are on hold in India entirely because of Chandrayan. Successful Chandrayan will be a means for all round development in India and also without ignoring welfare programmes of children. India on the verge of Super power and she can afford soon its manned moon mission. We are lagging behind China because of such discouragement received in the past from such likeminded intellectual people.

The welfare programmers for the children and the needy is neglected or ignored not because scientific explorations such as Chandrayan. Our central as well as state government has enough of such programmes and are responsible for implementing them. There's enough fund earmarked for these but unfortunately it doesn't reach the end user, even if it does, it's just minuscule. Our mission for Chandrayana is to compete with the other four countries who have achieved it before and it's a must and worth when we have a large pool of talented scientist who are capable of achieving much more than that. Besides there's a commercial aspect to it to reap the benefit of this great project going forward contributing to our country’s GDP.

I dont completely agree with this. Yeah feeding hungry children is important and at the same time various scientific endeavors like Chandrayan should also be done. If we were to become superpower then we have to concentrate on all sectors.
