Now Gujarat government wants to rename Ahmedabad as Karnavati

Ahmedabad, Nov 7 (Zee News): Hours after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the renaming of Faizabad district as Ayodhya, the Gujarat government Tuesday said it was keen on rechristening Ahmedabad as Karnavati, if there were no legal hurdles.

Speaking to reporters in Gandhinagar, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government was willing to change Ahmedabad's name if it gets past the legal hurdles and receives required support.

"People are still having a feeling that Ahmedabad should be renamed as Karnavati. If we get required support to overcome the legal hurdles, we are always ready to change the name of the city," Patel told reporters when asked if the state government had a plan to rename India's only city having the 'World Heritage' tag.

Historically, the area around Ahmedabad has been inhabited since the 11th century, when it was known as Ashaval.

Chaulukya ruler Karna of Anhilwara (modern Patan) had waged a successful war against the Bhil king of Ashaval and established a city called Karnavati on the banks of the Sabarmati river.

Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411 A.D. Had laid the foundation of a new walled city near Karnavati and named it Ahmedabad after the four saints in the area by the name Ahmed.

"We can think of changing the name at an appropriate time," Patel added.

Slamming the BJP government over the issue, state unit Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said the promise to rename Ahmedabad was just another "poll gimmick" by the ruling party.

"For the BJP, issues like construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya and renaming Ahmedabad as Karnavati are the means to get votes of Hindus," said Doshi.

"BJP leaders dump such issues after coming to power. They only cheated Hindus all these years," he added.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the eve of Diwali announced that Faizabad district would henceforth be known as Ayodhya.

"Ayodhya is a symbol of our 'aan, baan aur shaan' (honour, pride and prestige)," Adityanath said in Ayodhya.

The BJP government in the northern state had already renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj.

@Sahil mangalore, why not manganauru? This changing the names of states as they what makes one to think, that they are gone mad.Is it really needed?it makes to change names on atlas all over ,tourists to irritate. One who used to these names will find difficult later when names are new. These all old news are historical.Let Indian history live.Dont go to change as they want.when next govt comes they want to change .so everybody will think these indians are not normal.instead of someother changes in country ,concentrate in changing names of states. How mad it is.

With nothing tangible to show on the governance front, the BJP government in states across India appear to have kicked off a competition of sorts on changing Muslim-sounding names of famous landmarks and places.

Hindutva icon and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was the first to change the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj since it was deemed to carry the name of Allah. He then quickly followed it up with renaming Faizabad to Ayodhya.

Adityanath’s ‘success’ seems to have affected other BJP chief ministers elsewhere in the country.

Ahmedabad is India’s only city having the ‘World Heritage’ tag. UNESCO should withdraw the title to the city if it is renamed.

    Shankar,
Up to personal level it is ok to have a name (Indian names for Christians) it is ones choice & desire. With any name one would not become extra intelligent and anti-Indian. Some families with 5 children all are having Indian names. Even if my parents had such vision I would have had an Indian name too.
My contention is why BJP leaders are hell bent change historical names and try to replace with historical or non-related name for a place. It's only an ego or Hinduism and not out of any sense. Let these leaders utilize their time and affords for something fruitful purpose and not chasing meaning less goal. Is that BJP's election agenda or trying fool people with Hindutva sentiments.
Why can't they change BJP to BHP (Hindu)

If BJP continues for a longer period they may bring an ordinance to have only Indian names irrespective of ones Religion. Christians have already in the trend of having Indian name but not surname.

    Flavian,
You know, your immediate next generation, born in 1980 to 1995 approx., all Christians in Mangalore had common names like Veena, Ravi,Shaila, Vanitha, Prakash, Divya, Navya, Santhosh.. and many more. But, later on everyone in India started cocooning inside their own religions, slowly became religious fanatics and started adopting western Christian names.
Katte gangs in the evenings had Lobos, Bhattas Shettys and abduls whereas now, lobos gangs sit near church compound, bhatta shettys outside bhajana mandirs and abduls in mosques!!

With each passing day both the BJP government/s and the party are proving themselves to be nothing more than a bunch of clowns. The administration has gone to dogs and now with elections round the corner then have woken up with new ideas of polarization like name changing and Ram temple...……...It is time to give these fools a resounding SLAP and kick them out for good. Each one of the BJP leaders is trying to outdo the other in madness. It is as if we are being ruled by a bunch of zombies.
