Police watched, Sangh Parivar took over Sabarimala: Congress

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 7 (IANS): The Sangh Parivar virtually took over the Sabarimala temple during the 24 hours it opened while the police were mere spectators, the Congress said on Wednesday.

Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala told reporters Wednesday: "The government and police were an abject failure as BJP and RSS activists had the final say in the temple town till 10 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday) when the temple closed after a day.

"The police were mere spectators while these forces reigned supreme at the temple," he added.

The temple opened for a day at 5 p.m. on Monday and closed on Tuesday at 10 p.m.

The rightwing groups had made it clear that they would not allow the entry of women in the age group of 10 to 50 though the Supreme Court on September 28 had ruled that the shrine must be opened to women from all age groups.

At a time when the deity of Ayyappa and faith associated with that eternal celibate God, Naishtika Brahmachari, is summoned by several people and public figures to frustrate the implementation of the SC judgment allowing women to enter Ayyappa shrine in Sabarimala, it is worthwhile to recall that the deity of Lord Padmanabha in the sacred Ananthasayanam temple in Thiruvananthapuram was cited before Sardar Patel by Dewan of Travancore of the princely State, Sir CP Ramaswami Iyer, to frustrate Sardar's attempts to unify India and make Travancore an integral part of the Indian Union. He told Sardar that it was not in the realm of possibility to merge Travancore with the Indian Union as the sovereign authority of the princely State rested with Lord Padmanabha who could not be subordinated to the Indian Union.
The wise Sardar countered him and asked a sharp question as to how the mighty rulers of Travancore allowed Lord Padmanabha to occupy an insignificant position owing allegiance to the British authorities. President of India late KR Narayanan while unveiling statue of Sardar Patel in front of the Central Hall of the Parliament on 14th August 1998 stated that the arguments and methods adopted by Sardar Patel for integration of princely States were manifold and effective and insightfully observed that when "Sir CP Ramaswamy Iyer, held out the argument that no one could negotiate a merger of the State with India as Travancore was ruled "in the name and on behalf of the tutelary deity, Sri Padmanabha", the Sardar snapped with a twinkle in his eye "Is that so? Then please tell me how Travancore rulers could allow Lord Padmanabha to become subservient to the British Crown?".
The Grand old Congress party has forgotten the history of its great leaders. It should remind the BJP which erected the tallest statue. The Congress should invoke the words of Sardar Patel on religion and state.
If former CM JH Patel can handle the crisis why Congress is not seeking legal action?

As reported by TOI, the controversial speech made by the BJP Chief in Kerala Sreedaran Pillai in Calicut on 4th November that the Tantri had consulted him before he announced that the Sanctum Sanctorum would be closed if any women enters the Temple. He also stated that everyone surrenderd to the agenda of the BJP and it provided a Golden opputunity for the BJP in Kerala.

These revelations by Mr Pillai has exposed the attempts made by the BJP to politicise the Sabarimala issue and reap political gains as opposed to the stand taken Publicly by the party that it was taking up the cause of Ayyappa Devotees to protect the Customs and Rituals of the Temple and that the October 17-22nd agitation was mostly planned and implemented by the BJP.

So while the central Govt issued an advisory to the state Govt to provide protection to women devotees, their BJP counterparts in Kerala were staging a mockery against the Supreme Court order. Both the BJP and the RSS initially welcomed the Supreme Court order and back tracked later to take advantage of the court order and disturb the peace in Kerala.

They stand thouroughly exposed for their infamous Double Speak. The people of Kerala will give a befitting reply to the BJP for their double standards at the appropriate time.

Nobody has the right to interfere with temple matters and customs except the temple management and devotees who are Akand Brahmachaaris for life. Only those who prcatice celibacy, no vices, pure vegetarian and devotees of Lord Ayyappa for life has say here. Rest have to follow whatever rules legally are in place without any reaction or violance if they want to visit this shrine.
