Hindu Man Saved me from being Gangraped: Nun to Crime Branch

Press Trust of India

Bhuvaneshar, Nov 19: The nun who was allegedly raped during communal violence in Kandhamal has told the Crime Branch of Orissa police that after the sexual assault, she was saved by a local Hindu man from being gangraped, police said on Wednesday.

During her examination by the Crime Branch team in New Delhi, the 29-year-old nun said that she was raped at K Nuagaon in Baliguda during Orissa bandh on August 25, the sources said.

Though two others also molested and attempted to rape her immediately after the incident, a local Hindu man came to her rescue and saved her from being gangraped, the nun was quoted to have said in her statement before the Crime Branch team.

Inspector General of Police (Crime Branch) Arun Ray confirmed that both the nun and Father Thomas Chelan, only witness to the incident, were examined between 5 pm and 7.30 pm. According to sources, the nun was confident that she would be able to identify the accused, with whom she had a scuffle.

However, the alleged victim was worried that she might not be able to identify the two others who had also attempted to rape her as she was in a semi-conscious state after being raped, they said.

Expressing her unwillingness to go to Kandhamal again, she urged the Crime Branch team to organise the Test Identification Parade (TIP) of accused persons anywhere in Orissa except Kandhamal, sources said.

Christians now stop denouncing hindus and hinduism. The statement of the nun is the testimony of the greatness of hinduism & our cultural ethos and beliefs. It is sad that some people went out to the way  in  branding the entire hindu community as Bajrang dals

Hindus have been kind, tolerant for years and there are legends about their heroic examples. This good Hindu has made all the Hindus proud by his help to the nun. The extremists who spoil the name of Hindus could reflect a bit and stop spreading hatred for political gains. The actual misunderstanding is between the extremists wing and other religions. There are no complains against Hindus. The relationship will continue as earlier. Let us request the Hindus to stop these extremists, and their hatred.

This incidence tells us that there are very good Hindus who comes to the rescue of anyone whenever and wherever there is a need. I am proud of this hindu man who rescued this nun from further humiliation. When it comes to rescue we should not look whether she/he is our relative or cast etc. but consider all are human beings. If we all to follow this simple rule, India will be one day one of the safest & prosperous place in the world.

"Satyamev Jayate" At last the truth will prevail and justice will rule. Hope the crime branch will unearth the truth. All the culprits have to be punished. The police present on duty on that ill fated day when the nun was raped are also the witnesses. They too should be cross examined.

Lydia, please do not generalise or compare an isolated case to this. Out of the millions of priests and nuns who have dedicated their lives and live up to their vows you get to hear about only a very few (3 in this case). Are we all saints in  society - why only point the fingers at the priests and nuns. Remember they too are human. Appreciate what they do and do not brand them as bad just because a small percentage is bad.

Majority of Hindus are peace loving people and there is no strange it to know the nun was saved by a Hindu. During Hindu/Muslim riots many muslims saved Hindus and vice versa. Everywhere, good and bad.One rotten fish spoils whole lot.

What right do we have to seek justice if the case of Sr. Abaya is brought in comparison to this ? If men who vow for celibacy indulge in such shameful deeds, how can we rise and shout for justice when ordinary people do similar deeds ? I feel ashamed of being a member of a group that both these women belong to.
