Sabarimala devotees not 'Gulag inmates': Amit Shah to Kerala government

New Delhi, Nov 20(PTI): BJP President Amit Shah Tuesday slammed the Pinarayi Vijayan government's handling of the situation in Sabarimala as "disappointing" and accused the Kerala government of treating pilgrims as "Gulag inmates" and making them spend nights next to "pig droppings".

Asserting that his party stands firmly with every Ayyappa devotee who holds the Sabarimala tradition close to his heart, the BJP president said his party will not let the LDF "crush people's faith with impunity".

In a series of tweets, Mr Shah said, "If several reports of flushing resting places for devotees and them having to spend nights next to pig droppings and dustbin are true, then Pinarayi Vijayan must realize that he can't treat Ayyappa devotees like inmates of Gulag. We won't let LDF crush people's faith with impunity," the BJP chief said.

Gulag was a system of forced labour camps established during Joseph Stalin's rule in the Soviet Union.

Shah's comments underlined his party's support to devotees protesting against the state government's move to implement a Supreme Court order lifting the bar on women of menstruating age from visiting the temple.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has accused the BJP of politicising the court order with the chief minister asserting that it is the job of a government to implement the top court's order.

Mr Shah said the way Pinarayi Vijayan's government is handling the sensitive issue of Sabarimala is disappointing as the "Kerala police is treating young girls, mothers and aged inhumanly, forcing them to take the arduous pilgrimage, without even basic facilities like food, water, shelter and clean toilets".

"If Pinarayi Vijayan thinks he can rise against people's movement to preserve Sabarimala by arresting K Surendran, BJP's Thrissur district president and six others, then he is mistaken," Mr Shah said.

The BJP party president Amit Shah who is 'Jain' by birth perhaps don't know the rituals of the Sabarimala Vratham.

As the part of the vratham devotee must spend at least two nights in the forest, during Yatra and as you won’t get comfortable beds, it is advised to practice by sleeping on mats without pillows. He shall not sleep on the bed but on the floor, he shall not use the pillow but wooden block, he shall not use footwear but walk with bare feet and not use an umbrella.
The jungle with wild boars, the true devotion means he must treat himself life "Gulag inmates" and making them spend nights next to "pig droppings".
Who cares "droppings of Pig or human" if his devotion to Lord Ayyappa is pure?

Let Amit Shah chant 'Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa' instead of 'discrete' Sabarimala for the sake of vote bank politics.

This hate person is in KIerala only to widen the valley between public and Govt. He is not interested in anything but political gain. He is in kerala to spread venum agaisnt kerala state Govt which is not giving respect to sangh parivar. BJP is playing here only to get political benefit and nothing else. Central Govt did not bother to help the victims of worst Flood and now shedding crocodile tears on sabarimala. this is only to deceive and cheat keralians. BJP is trying its best to get entry into state assembly, but i am sure that peace loving people of kerala will not favor this anti communal + anti national party.

There are men-women who are in favor and there are men-women who are against this SC verdict.

But, the protesters who are in favor and who are against the verdict belong to the same political party. It seems they are instigated to be against SC verdict and that too in non-BJP ruled state.

They don't have a voice against this verdict in BJP ruled state. Feel really sorry for their denial of their rights.

Whatever anyone says about Shabarimala issue. The situation of the pilgrims are pathetic and i feel the Kerala government has handled the situation very badly. There might be a better way to handle this situation.

Anyways atleast this issue has united many Hindus in Kerala which was very much needed.
