Bangladesh observes Armed Forces Day


Dhaka, Nov 21 (IANS): With due pomp and honour, the Armed Forces Day commemorating the martyrdom of military personnel in Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War was observed on Wednesday.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid glowing tributes to the Liberation War martyrs who laid down their lives for the country's independence from Pakistan in 1971, reports Xinhua news agency.

Hamid laid wreaths at the altar of Shikha Anirban (eternal flame) in the morning and stood in solemn silence for a while to pay respect to the martyrs.

Hasina placed a floral wreath before the flame for honouring the nation's martyrs.

A contingent of the Army, Navy and Air Force presented a salute on the occasion.

Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed and Air Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat paid tribute as well.
