Arts festival to pay tribute to late singer-actor Talat Mahmood

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS): An upcoming multi-arts festival "Jashn-e-Talat" is all set to celebrate the life and works of Bollywood playback singer and ghazal legend Talat Mahmood (1923-1998) on November 30 here.

The festival, organised by journalist and Mahmood's grand-niece Sahar Zaman, will come as a multi-performance tribute to the legend by ghazal vocalist Rashmi Agarwal, Padma Shri Kathak exponent Shovana Narayan, veteran actor Sohaila Kapur and artist Anubhav Som, a statement by the organisers said.

This year's tribute will also mark the 20th year of the death anniversary of the "Jayen Toh Jayen Kaha" singer, the statement added.

"The tribute features young performers, portrait artists, dancers, actors and singers, keeping in line with Mahmood's songs, ghazals and his acting roles that he took up in about a dozen films," said Zaman, who has curated the tribute.

Kapur, veteran theatrist and film actor, who will be narrating his life on stage, said she grew up listening to him and the songs he sang for her uncle and iconic Indian actor Dev Anand.

Narayan, Kathak dancer and former civil servant, will trace his journey from Lucknow to Kolkata and then to Mumbai and across the world.

"His life experiences of meeting his partner, the global adulation -- it all makes for a very touching story. I am so happy to perform on his life through my dance," she said.

The tribute will feature some of his "most well known filmi songs" by ghazal singer Agarwal, and a live on-stage painting of the Lucknow-born Mahmood by portrait artist Som.

"Jashn-e-Talat" would take place at India Habitat Centre. Tickets can be bought online at www.bookmyshow.com for Rs 200, Rs 350 and Rs 500.
