Now in Custody - Face of Mumbai's Terror

Rediff

Mumbai, Nov 29: They may have come prepared for raining death and havoc on innocents, but the sole terrorist arrested in the audacious terror strike on Mumbai is not so sure he himself wanted to die, says the tabloid Mumbai Mirror. His photograph was the one that was flashed by all the media on Thursday, of a young man clad in a Versace t-shirt and cargo pants, a haversack on his back, holding an Ak-56 rifle and walking across Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, firing indiscriminately.

Mumbai Mirror quotes the Anti Terrorist Squad confirming that this is the terrorist who is currently in custody.

On Wednesday night, this terrorist spewed bullets in CST station and killing a large number of innocents, before moving to Metro cinema junction nearby, and from there towards Girgaum Chowpatty where in an encounter he shot dead inspector Tukaram Umbale from the Gamdevi police station.

Another Mumbai tabloid, Mid-Day, says this terrorist was the one who shot ATS chief Hemant Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and additional commissioner of police Ashok Kamte outside CST station, and quotes Mumbai Commissioner Hasan Gafoor to confirm this.

From here the terrorist escaped in Salaskar's own vehicle towards Metro cinema and finally towards Girgaum Chowpatty in a stolen Skoda car where, while his co-terrorist was shot down, he was captured.

Mumbai Mirror describes the terrorist in custody as being around 21 years old, speaking fluent English, and hailing from Gipalpura in Faridkot in Pakistan.

The newspaper says this terrorist, after being shot in the hand, pretended to be dead but was found out on the way to hospital and was promptly arrested.

He was initially tight-lipped but cracked up on seeing the mutilated body of the other terrorist and cried out, 'I do not want to die, please put me on saline.'

Ammunition, a satellite phone and a layout plan of CST station were recovered from the terrorist, who is said to be singing like a canary in custody.

According to the tabloid, the chief of the terrorist operation had come to Mumbai a month ago, took photographs of the various sites, filmed strategic locations apart from training the group to 'kill till the last breath'. Each terrorist was given 6-7 magazines with 50 bullets, eight hand grenades an AK-57, automatic loading revolver and a supply of dry fruits.

The terrorist told his interrogators that the group had left Karachi in one boat and on reaching Gujarat hoisted a white flag. On interception by the Coast Guard near Porbandar and being questioned by its two officers, they managed to kill one of them and overpowering the other, forcing him to take them till Mumbai. A few nautical miles away, there were three speedboats waiting for them, which they took to reach the Colaba coast after killing the other Coast Guard officer as well.

On landing the 10 men broke up into groups. Four went to the Taj Mahal hotel, two to Trident, two towards Nariman House, and two towards CST station -- one of them being the captured terrorist.

He is currently kept in an undisclosed location where the police interrogation has been so intense that he went back on what he told the hospital authorities. 'Now I don't want to live,' the newspaper reports him as saying.

Dear Friends, it is sad that  we  Mangalorean’s take each and everything on a  religious perspective. Can’t we keep religion aside during this national  crisis ? It is a time for us to be united and to be “Indian”. We need to tackle terrorism from the heart not from brain and contribution of each and every Indian is required to eliminate  terrorism. Our Government should not trust the assurance from foreign governments .It is  time for the Indian government to implement some stringent laws that will be a nightmare for terrorists.

According to Maharashtra Times, a Marathi daily, the terrorist entered the Kama hospital and gunned down two ward boys who were dressed in the hospital uniform. One of the terrorist pointed an AK 47 rifle towards the third ward boy and asked him in fluent Marathi whether he is an employee in the hospital. The ward boy kneeled and pleaded, saying he is not an employee and he is here for his daughter who is admitted because she had a heart attack. The terrorist inquired again if he is lying. The Ward boy confirmed that he is telling the truth and he was spared. The employee informed his higher ups about this incident who were left astounded. When this episode was brought to the notice of the police, they were also dumbstruck about the terrorist's speaking in Marathi fluently. The terrorists being familiar with the language have raised several issues. As these were the same terrorists who killed the three top cop.

Its really a worst incident for all indians, at the end its only common man who suffers and some politicians and leaders are enjoying it. This incident have kept few questions in dark. - Why the attackers didnt talk anything about ransom or any negotiation or purpose of attack? - How come the good ATS leaders got killed Priciesly, who had opened Malegoan blast case and was supervising the case followup? - Why did the Force took hostages life for granted, and fixed them between the crossfire and got them killed? -

Even if a small fishing boat goes astray in international border water, its been imediately picked up and taken to custody. How come a Ship loaded with weapons and attackers travels for 100's of miles and lands priciesly next to Hotel Taj and that too unnoticed? - Who was arrested, why is he not front of media, where are the dead bodies of terrorist? how many of them, 10, 12 or 20? - Even when there is a small blast, the organization behind it imediately claims responsible, why no organization had claimed involvmement after doing such a huge attack? - Few months back in Mumbai more than 50 pakistanis got killed in a railway bomb blast, was this a revenge for that? There are many questions like this about this incident. As a citizen its time to think, where the India is heading and what will be the future of its Citizens. Lets hope, pray and work for peace. Jai Hindh

Two WRONGS dont make a RIGHT, and these people who are responsible for such a large scale destruction and loss of precious lives should be punished severly and no one should dare to repeat such acts of terror. But i dont see much difference between what happened in Orissa and now here in Mumbai, but sad part is that there are a lot of people who support the incidents that happened in Orissa.

It would be a GRAVE mistake to keep this terrorist alive. After questioning, he should be sent to meet his creator. Otherwise we would be exchanging him for some more innocent Indian lives held hostages in Afghanistan or Pakistan, that too escorted by some "HEROIC" Indian Minister accompanying the terrorist ! Finish him off in an encounter please.

These terrorists are pawns in the hands of larger conspirators.Look at the photo of one of them walking in CST.He could be just another cricketer or a Bollywood aspirant. But he has been brainwashed that he is doing something heroic like that hero in a video game. A combination of insecurity, inferority complex and the negativity are built into their psyches to do these gruesome acts. The main perpetrators are the fascist, communalists who spread hatred in these youth in their madrassas(and radical religious institues)and then inculcate commando training. Those people who do this should be pursued and dealt with.
