Surgical strike overhyped, politicised: ex-Army officer Lt Gen (retd) DS Hooda

Chandigarh, Dec 8 (DC): The initial euphoria over the success of surgical strike was natural but the constant hype around the operation was unwarranted, said former Army officer Lieutenant General D S Hooda (retired), two years after the surgical strikes were carried out by the Army across the Line of Control.

"I do think there was too much hype over it. The military operation was important and we had to do it. Now how much should it have been politicised, whether it is right or wrong is something that should be asked to politicians," Lieutenant General DS Hooda (retired) who was the Northern Army Commander when the operation was carried out on September 29, 2016 across the Line of Control (LoC) as a response to a terrorist attack in Uri earlier that month told news agency ANI.

The Army had said its special forces inflicted "significant casualties" on terrorists waiting there to cross into Indian territory.

Lt Gen Hooda was speaking during a panel discussion on the topic, 'Role of Cross-Border Operations and Surgical Strikes,' on the first day of Military Literature Festival 2018 in Chandigarh.

The discussion was attended by Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore amongst a battery of former Generals and Army Commanders.

Many war veterans cautioned against "politicisation" of the military operations, as per a Punjab government release.

Lt Gen Hooda said it was natural to have initial euphoria about the success but the constant maintenance of hype around the military operations was unwarranted, the release said.

Responding to a question from the audience, General Hooda said in hindsight, it would have been better had we done it (surgical strikes) secretly.

The aim of any such offensive had to be not only tactical but strategic too, which substantially hampers enemy morale, he said.

Elaborating upon how the forces on the border should react to events that occur on the Line of Control (LoC), Lt Gen Hooda said, "I think the way the things are going on the LoC, we must have a pro-active and unpredictable response unless Pakistan does something to ease tensions and stop infiltrations."

Surgical strike overhyped it is an attempt to deflect the failure from 'Demonetisation' and also winning Uttar Pradesh voters using 'nationalism' token.

Perhaps this is the first time in Indias' history operation secrets is shared by Prime Minister Modi government to the public for vote bank politics.

To date, PM Modi nor Defence Minister can justify the operations. Whereas Pakistan has taken the International journalist on Helicopter tour on the sight were India has claimed they strike within its borders.

This disclosure made by Lt Gen (retd) DS Hooda is enough to prove that PM Modi government using 'nationalism' for vote bank and continue 'Rafale Scam' chanting 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'.

Many surgical strikes against Pak was carried out by Indian Army even before 2014 . But these surgical strikes were never published nor politicised like this bajapa govt did. Many of these strikes were carried out in local level so secretly that even people living nearby did not know. The long term consequences of public announcement of surgical strikes was not thought by this NM govt. They gave even footage to some foreign tv channels endangering lives of Indian Jawans in present and future.

It's a well known fact that bhakths suffer from selective amnesia, but anyway you can always use Google to know who tore Pakistan in to two in 1971 which silenced Pakistan until Kargil happened and who was ruling India at that time not to mention the shame our nation was subjected to at Kandahar. Btw, any update on getting Dawood from Pakistan ? There was a big promise to get him if BJP was elected in 2014?

The BJP Govt exploited the surgical strike to reap rich political dividents which is unfortunate. Never in the history of Independent India has a Govt stooped to such a level to extract political milage over a Army Mission. After four and half years the Govt has nothing to show case about its achievements except causing untold Misery to the common man with their total failure to grasp the idea of India.

The country is in dire need of a change. The earlier the better. This Govt has lacked the sensitivity to deal with the Armed Forces that has affected the Shaan and Izaat of all the three Armed Services.
