Mumbai, Dec 12: Mumbai Congress president Kripa Shankar Singh handed over the letters of flats and cheques to the families of four martyrs of the 26/11 terrorist attacks in the metro, on Thursday December 11.
Singh had written a letter on November 27 to the then chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh that Maharastra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) flats should be given to the families of the martyrs, and a monetary compensation be announced for the bereaved families and jobs provided to their family members.
On Singh’s initiative, the cabinet confirmed the same and announced MHADA flats for all 18 martyrs, Rs 25 lac each as compensation, and jobs for a family member of each of the martyrs. He handed over allotment letter of a MHADA flat of 965 sq ft at Oshiwara and a cheque of Rs 1 lac to Kavita Karkare, wife of slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare.
He also handed over allotment papers of an MHADA flat of 770 sq ft at Pratiksha Nagar and a cheque of Rs 1 lac to Pratibha Patil, wife of constable Jayant Hanumant Patil and also to Madhavi More, wife of sub-inspector Prakash Pandurang More.
Singh also visited the home of slain inspector Vijay Salaskar and handed over the allotment letter for an MHADA flat of 965 sq ft at Oshiwara and a cheque of Rs 1 lac, to his wife Smita Salaskar.
Families of five martyrs have been allotted flats of 965 sq ft at MHADA in Oshiwara, and the other 13 will be allotted MHADA flats of 779 sq ft at Pratiksha Nagar.
Stamp duty and registration fees of all the 18 flats will be borne by MHADA.
The cheques of Rs 1 lac each is in addition to the Rs 25 lac compensation for each martyr announced by the government of Maharashtra. Allotment letters of flats and cheques for the 14 other martyrs will also be sent by MHADA and Mumbai Congress to their families shortly. These include the families of Ashok Kamte in Pune and Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in Bangalore.
The families appreciated the efforts put in by Mumbai Congress and MHADA.
Amarjeet Manhas, chairman, Mumbai Housing Board, and Abhimanyu Kale, MHADA joint CEO, who facilitated the handing over of flats, also accompanied Singh.
