Bengaluru, Dec 20: Kannada writers, educationists, and activists fighting for Kannada came together on Wednesday December 19 to stoutly oppose the government's decision as announced by the chief minister, to adopt English as the medium of education from the first standard in 1,000 government schools from next year onward. They announced their decision to fight the government's stand tooth and nail, and if necessary, to adopt the Gokak agitation model to achieve the objective.
The meeting, held under the aegis of Kannada Sahitya Parishat on Wednesday December 19, was attended by veteran writers, Chandrashekhar Kambar, S L Bhyrappa, Chandrashekhar Patil, Siddalingaiah, Pradhan Gurudath, Kalegowda Nagawara, president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Manu Baligar and several others. All of them in unison raised their voices against the introduction of English as medium of instruction. They made their decision to fight against the move of the government known in a press conference.
Kambar urged the government to go back from its decision in the interests of the future of Kannada language. S L Bhyrappa lamented that no party other than DMK is trying to protect regional language. He said that when Congress was ruling the state and the centre in the past, the state government supported the central government's efforts to impose Hindi.
Chandrashekhar Patil said that if the decision of the government on English medium gets legal backing, Kannada would face peril.
Kalegowda Nagawara pointed out that educationists, psychologists, doctors etc have said that children who get education when young in a language that is not their own, their talents do not blossom. Siddalingaiah also opposed the move while Manu Baligar said that he is not opposed to the idea of introducing English as one of the subjects in schools.
