India to send three observers for Bangladesh polls


New Delhi, Dec 20 (IANS): India will be sending three officials as observers for the Bangladesh general election scheduled to be held at the end of this month, senior official said on Thursday.

Briefing media here, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said the Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh has invited representatives from India, as also from other countries, to witness the elections as observers.

"From our side we are sending three senior officials who have actually been designated by the Chief Election Commissioner," Kumar said.

They will be traveling to Bangladesh from December 28 to 31 as the guests of their counterpart agency in Bangladesh.

General election will be held in Bangladesh on December 30 to select members of the Jatiya Sangsad.

"We respect the functioning of democracy in Bangladesh, which is a vibrant democracy, a close neighbour and a highly valued partner for India," he added.
