Lok Sabha passes bill to give citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants

New Delhi, Jan 8 (DC): The contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019, which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, was passed by Lok Sabha today amid massive uproar by opposition parties, including the Congress and the Left.

Most parties from the Northeast have raised strong objection to the bill.

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a partner in the BJP-led Assam government, snapped ties with the saffron party on Tuesday over the issue while NDA allies like the Shiv Sena and the JD(U) have also opposed this legislation.

Mizoram and Meghalaya governments have opposed the bill by adopting a resolution against it in their respective cabinet meetings.

Earlier, while introducing the bill in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the bill will pave the way for Indian citizenship to the "persecuted religious minorities"-- the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis---from the three countries. "They have no place to go to, except India," he said.

Singh said the migrants - Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis - were earlier given protection against legal action in 2015 and 2016. "Long term visa provision was made for them. The proposed amendment will make these persecuted migrants eligible to apply for citizenship," he said.

Singh said citizenship will be given to them only after due scrutiny and recommendation of district authorities and the state government.

The minimum residency period for citizenship is proposed to be reduced from existing 12 years under the present law to seven years. The legislation also seeks to provide relief to persecuted migrants who have come through western borders of the country to states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and other states, the home minister said.

The bill will apply to all states and union territories of the country and the beneficiaries of Citizenship Amendment Bill will be able to reside in any state of the country.

The bill was originally introduced in 2016 and was later sent to the JPC, which submitted its report on Monday. On the basis of the recommendations of the JPC, a fresh bill was introduced on Tuesday.

Opposition parties have raised objections to the bill. The Congress said many states have opposed the bill and it should be sent to a select committee. As the government did not heed to the demand, the Congress staged a walkout.

TMC's Saugata Roy dubbed the bill as "divisive" and "insidious" that goes against the basic tenents of the constitution. "This is the worst form of vote-bank politics", Roy said.

The headline is somewhat misleading. The immigrants are only from countries that persecute religious minorities like pakisthan, Bangladesh & Afghanisthan. The Conditions of minoritieshere are very pathetic. The minoriities here live in constat fear. Their girls are forcibly taken away and married off forcibly . Not even the courts come to their rescue. Take the recent case of Asia Bibi a christian. She was charged with blasphemy. The supreme court exonerated her. Yet the whole of Pakistha came to a grinding halt due to protests against her acquittal. The religious minorities there live marginalised menial life. So this will help the poor religious minorities in these countries.

I strongly assert that this granting of citizenship should be on exchange basis. Tell the governments of the countries they are coming from, to take back very troublesome members of non-Hindu community. We can get rid of SIMI, ISI, HUJ and other organizations' people by this method.

Please do not bring-in people just to increase your number count for the sake of votes. We already know the state of those who came earlier - they are like second hand citizens - they are kept at a arms length irrespective of their religious affiliation.

The idea may be selfish , however there is one good thing coming out of it. Persecuted minorities especially from Pakistan will get a lease of life and a new hope in India. Condition of christians and hindus in Pakistan is horrible and getting worse day by day.

BJP only cares about power. It does not care if Assam is destroyed by illegal bangladeshi infiltrators. BJP wants to win elections in northeast India with the votes of illegal bangla HImdu infiltrators.

Nice bill. According to bjp there are no Muslims anywhere in the world. There was a time while Muslims were existing. MJ Akbar, Shahnawaz, Mukhtar Ansari, Najma Heptulla, are also not muslims and they feel prouod to declare themselves as non-muslims. BJP has already declared that it has no mumslim members in their partyand they don't need muslim votes. Accordig to bjp triple talaq bill is not favoring muslim women and they want this bill only to deceive them. Bjp should also consider citizenship to Jews, Mangoleans, Red Indians, Zulus, Africans etc etc .

This Govt is consisting of fools and illogic people and has passed he bill only owing next election. they will ask these people to vote for bjp only otherwise will be sent back. This clearly shows that bjp is 100 percent anti muslims and I could not understand how creatures loike Mukhtar, Akbar, Shahnawaz etc are supporting bjp. May be these people have changed their faith to Hinduism and keeping muslim names only to cheat muslims. Shit in their mouths. They are cousins of Mir |Qasim and Mir Jafar. Let them go to hell. We condemn this bill.
