Mangaluru: Unscientific drainage and footpath becomes nightmare to residents

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Feb 1: The drainage construction work taken up from Bejai Circle to KSRTC bus stand is going on in a snail’s pace and the construction of footpath is unscientific and is inviting accidents. The construction work started three months ago and are left uncompleted. The work which is half done also lacks planning. Already the delay in work has drawn flak from the public. At the same time, public is too scared to use the new footpath, because it is too dangerous to walk on it.

Months ago, the contractors of MCC started the work of widening the drainage. For this, they dug the footpath that was constructed by both the MCC as well as the owners of nearby building using the interlocks. But after the drainage work, the said contractor did not place the interlocks in a proper manner and the present footpath is constructed like point knott. The footpath in front of Bianca Complex is completely unscientific. People cannot walk on the foot path as it is slippery. The residents, especially the elders and children, cannot control from slipping and if they lose control they will fall and end up on the main road.

The open holes on drainage are also a big threat to life as they do not have any barricades and safety walls. Meanwhile, when a few shopkeepers and residents of Bianca Complex asked the people on the spot as to the completion time of the work, the contractor blamed Officials of MCC and its engineer for the delay.

Speaking to Daijiworld Lohit, a shopkeeper said "Three months back the contractors of MCC started the work of reconstruction of drainage. They dug both sides of the road, which is very crowded. The traffic on the road is also very dense and it makes our life miserable for the pedestrians. The open holes on drainage are inviting danger as they do not have any protection wall or barriers. When we asked with the contractors and officials who visit the spot on some days about the unscientific and half done work, they replied in a threatening voice and suggested us to remain in side our homes only."

"The construction of footpath is toally unscientific. We cannot walk on that footpath because one side of it is steep. The pedestrians cannot get grip of the pointed footpath and chances are high of slipping and ending up on the main road. It is suspected that there is some scam that has taken place in this project as the concerned engineers have completely neglected the safety of people," says a resident who wants to remain anonymous.

According to existing guidelines, the contractors should take all safety measures at the time of construction of the footpaths. At the same time, the engineers should strictly inspect the work of the contractors with regards to its compliance to the given plan. But it seems in the matter of drainage construction, all these guidelines are thrown to air and work is going on without any proper plan. The residents of Bejai have appealed to the MCC to act on time, before the public stages a massive protest in this regard.

These pictures show 'Smart city' need more 'smart people'. If sitting MP has spent Rs 14,000 crores on development the city would have looked better than India's best-planned city Chandigarh or Dubai.

This city ruled by BJP since 1991 for 25 long years drainage and footpath becomes a nightmare to the city residents, what development can we expect from MP who wants to burn his own constituency?

Tell me one thing that is done properly in Mangalore or anywhere else in India. But I will stick to Mangalore for now because i know about this city more. Our roads are designed in a bad way. Some footpaths are death traps. Police put barricades like fools without consideration for the safety of road users. The reasoning for almost every accident is over speeding.... and solution for overspeeding is putting up speed breakers. they are not built according to any standard, not marked. The traffic lights are there just for the show... and not used in some places. Why bother to put them is it is not required. Most of the work what municipality carries out if they want to do it as a short term measure.

We are only worried about the cows in India or any other stupid communal issue. People run to the police complaining that someone hurt their feelings by putting up some comment in social media, but no one raises any issue if the public work carried out in a bad way which can endanger lives.

We have completely misplaced our priorities that it would be considered a joke in most parts of the civilized world.

Its not only in Bejai in all important places/locaities digging works for drains, widening of roads etc. are taken simultaneously by the MCC. Such works taken up in many places the public/Mangalore Citizens are put to lot of hardship and inconvenience caused to public. Dust is spread all over and the neighbouring suffer a lot specially senior citizens and small children as they developed health problems due to this dust. In many places roads are alllllllso blockd and no entry board is not put where we enter to such places. this should be done by MCC.

Everything in Mangalore City Corporation is not done properly only money making. The underground drainage system built under KUDCEMP ( Asian Bank Loan ) around Surathkal is utter failure. The drainage pipe was laid so deep that rain water started flowing in it. Also in future maintenance will be a big problem and even drainage waste will pollute nearby drinking water wells. Now again they are adding some tanks god onlyy know what for. No foresight , No engineering skill. Yenku panambooru kathe. All money minded.

There is no qualified Engineers nor Commissioner , they never inspect the work nor see progress of the work. At the same time Bejei both side different Corporators belong to the same party. But they are useless. It is their duty to see and control the work and see that work is going on properly. But they are all busy in their Private Business and don't get time to divert here.

Our MLA is busy in No Horn day.
If the police department wants it they can implement it in one day as most noise is made by busses. But our MLA is trying to create it as a great effort.
Infra is not in his agenda nor in our MPs.

Our corporation enginers are not educated with the latest know how. The corporators are not come to do service only loot the money needed for construction. Regarding time of completion it is not new it is a usual thing to delay the works. At Falnir Sturock rock work started in Dec. 2017 and the work is not over we have to get used to the working style of the corrupt officials.

Dylan mangalore,it is not the engineers are not updated about knowhow of present .Then they shouldnt take up the cotranct.when taken up not simply leave it half naked there,a danger to everyones life.what is the municipality doing?Sitting in AC
rooms and doing other works. They should be summoned there to see .In India many people doesnt take their job seriously and complete it timely.Their motto chalta hai.Just tell PM.Modi comes to visit and you will see how fast everyone will try to complete work .These lazy people have not even put any barriers. That doesnt need any updates to know.Only lazy work.Money must have gone to their account.so why worry?Atleast they could cover the open drainage.so much sense one should have.Let one cow fall in ,then immediately people will blame the workers.when a person falls ,then it is victims fault.

Whether BJP/Congress or any party, if people of particular ward elect a corrupt person as their corporator this is what they get. When these kind of civic works are done, the people of that particular ward who see irregularities in the projects in their area should question their corporator, as he is representing them in the MCC. Why the corporators a nd MLA's have not formed ward committees and area sabhas in MCC until now? Because the corporators and the babus of MCC cannot eat up public funds in the name of development. It is high time we people of mangalore come out of our comfort zones and start demanding our constitutional right for ward committees, Stop electing candidates in the name of party, religion, caste and community and see that genuine leaders who can work for people get elected in the next MCC election.
