Nuns 'sex slaves' scandal fresh blow to Catholic church

Vatican City, Feb 6 (AFP): Pope Francis's public admission that priests have used nuns as "sexual slaves" -- and may still be doing so -- marks a new chapter in the abuse crisis rocking the Catholic church.

"It is the first time that the pope, but also the church as an institution, has publicly admitted this abuse is taking place, and that's hugely important," Lucetta Scaraffia, editor of the Vatican's women's magazine, told AFP on Wednesday.

The pontiff on Tuesday said Catholic priests and bishops had been sexually abusing nuns, and that his predecessor Benedict XVI had dissolved a religious order of women because of "sexual slavery on the part of priests and the founder".

The Church has "suspended several clerics" and the Vatican has been "working (on the issue) for a long time," he said.

The abuse was "still going on because it's not something that just goes away like that. On the contrary," he added.

The nuns scandal broke as the Catholic church has had to contend with a wave of cases involving paedophile priests in countries worldwide from Ireland and the United States to Australia.

The papal admission followed a rare outcry last week from the Vatican's women's magazine, "Women Church World", over the rape of nuns, leaving them feeling forced to have abortions or raise children not recognised by their priest fathers.

"Many complaints have been filed with the Vatican and have not been followed up," said Scaraffia, who raised the issue in the February issue of "Women Church World", a supplement distributed with the Vatican's Osservatore Romano newspaper.

"I very much hope that a commission will be set up to investigate, and that nuns expert in the issue will be called to take part," she told AFP.

"They could move quickly with trials, and above all raise awareness because silence is what allows rapists to continue to rape," she added.

Scaraffia said the clerical abuse of nuns was a global issue, but one particularly prevalent in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Reports of such abuse are known to have been made from Chile to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Italy, India, Kenya, Peru and the Ukraine.

Those abused "do not find it easy to speak out. They fear retaliation against them and their congregations," Scaraffia said.

She said the issue was abusive power relationships, with clerics controlling everything from nuns' vocations to their salaries.

"It's a very difficult situation which has its roots in the nuns' dependence within the church. They are not recognised as equals."

Francis said Benedict had attempted to look into the order before he become pope. As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, he had headed the Vatican department that investigates sexual abuse, but his efforts had been "blocked".

Francis did not say by whom.

The Argentine pontiff also alluded to an ongoing investigation into another community, without naming it, but believed to be the Community of St. Jean in France.

That community admitted in 2013 that the priest who founded it had behaved "in ways that went against chastity" with several women in the order, according to French Catholic newspaper La Croix.

Francis's admission of the problem was "the umpteenth blow to the church's image, but also an occasion to show that change really is underway," Scaraffia said.

The key is "to strip priests of their air of power, which is what allows them to behave this way".

She admitted there was "great resistance" to investigating abuse claims within the church and uncovering predator priests, but added that there had initially been reluctance to address the clerical paedophilia crisis, "but that was overcome".

Pope has said. Church has heard. All the religious members too have heard. Let them handle it. Why giving a kind of advise? Look back and see in other religions what has happend Yet we do not comment. Because justice prevails.

My request to you readers, Let us not comment on our Pope's message. He is our head and we catholics obey him. We listen to him and follow. Let them handle such matters. Let us not comment what we hardly understand but pray to God for the justice and pray for all religious nuns, priest, Bishops and Pope that God shower His grace on them to lead a life according to His plan. Amen.

    God bless.

Jesus was a high valued spiritual Guru of the masses.
To follow the marriage of celibacy is hard for a human but not impossible.
The Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

    I quote Matthew 19:12

For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. Unquote.

All cannot be prophets, apostles, teachers and pastors.

    I quote Ephesians 4:11-13 & 15

    11. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Of course the satan is busy growling and prowling to deceive good will of men and women enticed in today's materialism and passions attractive to the humans.

THE ONE WHO REFRAINS FROM WORLDLY THINGS HE WILL GAIN ETERNAL LIFE.

IT IS BETTER TO EXPOSE WHAT IS TRUTH SO THAT THE CHURCH MAY PURIFY ITSELF REFRAINING FROM THE CARNAL DESIRES.

MATTHEW 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Remaining as a bachelor is not a hard but determination works.

St. Paul explains us elaborately to be married or to remain a bachelor.

    I quote 1 Corinthians 7 :7-11

For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.
    :
I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.

But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

    UNQUOTE.

hope my comment reaches at least the Catholic bishop houses and the seminaries.
It's a great move by the holy father to cleanse the Catholic church of such poison. What we find these days is, very sorry to say even if accused as a conservative stone age character, that the religious are not leading a life that they are called for. Better to leave the religious life than be a scandal. Don't bring in the argument that they too are human

People, please understand that the church is a tool (made up of human beings). This tool should be used for our final goal, to have a relationship with God. It is the human beings sin, not the church.

It is better for the church to admit their fault now and bring the propel down from the position whoever abused the position and power.

Let the humble servants who dedicate their life for People & Christ take their positions and lead the church. Humble one may not be good preachers, may not be smart enough but definitely good enough to bring peace and show us the path of salvation.

Priestly celibacy is considered a tradition, not official Church dogma. In theory, the pope could change the rule overnight. But that would raise practical issues. Currently, priests are paid through the donations people offer to the church. If priests are married, "you're going to have kids, health care expenses, and you have to pay for school — [kindergarten] through college," Having a family could take away the time and energy priests now focus on the spiritual needs of their flock.

@Ahmed .K.mangalore.,atleast concerning nuns ,they self choose it to live as single ,not want to marry because as married ,they have to concentrate on married life and duties which dont allow completely to serve the public or religious rites pray etc.

First and most important they want to live as virgins.so that they want ttheir life offer to Vergin Mary or certain Saints. As married person difficult to combine clerical life and personal life.As nuns more prayers, more offer,no enjoyments in public dance or partys etc.

From the side of priests,I cant say much, may be the offering the mass more to do,or keeping the secrets of confession, is what I believe.May be the teaching of Jesus to be his Apostels, they had to leave everything behind and follow him.
