Mangalore: Outrage over Attack on Girls - Issue Gains National Attention

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jan 25: The inhuman attack on young girls allegedly by Srirama Sene and Bajaranga Dal activists, though not seriously taken by the local authorities yet, has now gained national attention.

Usually only major issues like communal disturbances and international events were seen on the national television channels.  But Saturday's attack is now being highlighted on national television.

At least three national TV channels contacted Daijiworld office on Sunday  requesting  to share exclusive video footage taken by the daijiworld videographer.  Other national print media also requested permission from daijiworld to provide them with exclusive 'action' pictures published on daijiworld.

Times Now ,one of the leading News Channels says in its report that at least two women have been hospitalized and are undergoing treatment.  Ten suspected activists of Sri Ram Sene have been taken into custody on charges of assaulting customers of a pub in the busy Balmatta Road in the heart of the city.  IGP (Western Range) A M Prasad said the attackers alleged that the pub owner was allowing the boys and girls to dance in an "obscene manner".  No damage has been caused to the pub in the incident, he added.

On the other hand, The Sri Rama Sene and the Bajarang Dal have also separately claimed responsibility for the attack.  Prasad Attavar, State Deputy Convener of the Sri Ram Sena said that it was a spontaneous reaction against women, who flouted traditional Indian norms of decency.

According to Times Now News Channel, on Saturday evening at around 4 pm, two people approached the front desk of the pub and requested permission to enter the premises.  They said that they wanted to see what was going on inside.

Soon, nearly 40 people barged into the pub and targeted a group of five women, who had placed a lunch order.  Subsequently, another group attacked three other women in the pub.

Apart from media, women's rights advocacy groups have demanded immediate action against the attackers.

Reacting angrily to this horrifying incident, Women's Rights activist Madhu Kishwar said that the attackers have good political links and are a part of extortionist gang.  She went on to add, "The attack is an attempt to spread terror amongst restaurant owners in the city.  They cannot just keep expressing their anger over Americanized lifestyle in this manner."

Ranjana Kumar, another Women's Rights activist condemned the attack and strongly said that the men involved in this attack should be charged for assaulting women. She said, "This is an outrageous and a horrible incident. No one has the right to infringe on other's freedom.  Such kind of acts is absolutely unacceptable.  Those responsible should be immediately arrested and strict action should be taken against them."

"Because these kinds of attackers are let off scot free, such attacks continue all across the country.  I don't think these people had any business to get involved in others lives," added the activist.

The savage act of assaulting women deserves to be condemned. But when i read most of the opinions posted, the first impression i got was yet again , like so many million times, our concerns are utterly out of focus. Talk about people expressinng Shame for being Mangaloreans. What the hell!!! How come a city comes to become responsible for few mens' action?

Mangalore plays an important role in the economy of the state. Why victimize mangalore? Few people are surprisingly backing an assault like this. Resorting to violence of this nature is certainly not the way to go about. Suspecting party A to conspire against Party B, or deeming ruling govt absolutely incapable of handling the issue are some more examples of how we have lost focus. As things stand today, everything seems bad. Lets hope we all can find our way back to CIVILIZATION.

It is sad to see that in the 63rd year of this country's independence, we seem to have already started losing our independence again... and to who?!! Irrespective of what went on inside the pub, there is a proper channel to deal with unlawful activities (if there was anything illegal going on at all ). Who elected these cowardly goons (It took 40 of them to deal with a few women???) to power? Who gave them the right to take law into their own hands?

Every single one of those men who participated in this outrageous activity should be SEVERELY punished. At a time when Indians should be standing united to fight terrorism it is sad to see such events dominating the media. Anybody who supports such barbaric activities should be ashamed of calling themselves humans (let alone Indians). Shameful!!!

They themselves may have been drunk ? Tomorrow the same people may misuse this excuse and make all the girls lives in mangalore a mess. Imagine if a NRI girl was Hit by these people ,

What image it would have shown of Mangalore? No NRI student will ever think of coming and studying over here. Hitting girls has already made the name of Mangalore go low. It is the responsibility of local administration to act fast. District commissioner should reprimand police force to nab the culprit. I still wonder why they targeted those two girls. Are they drug peddler, I doubt. It may be the rivalries between two hoteliers who want to tarnish the name of the other.

As per the NTDV news, some spoke person of sri ram sena was saying that they have warned that hotelier for drug peddling in their premises but he denied about beating of girls by their members. Then who is the ring leader and what is their motive. The picture of the culprit is flashed in this web site and all other news media. It is disrespect to women and has brought bad name to Mangalore all around the world. It is an insult to our constitution and a big blow for democracy.

Talibanism has come to Mangalore and the Govt. has done nothing about it. What development is taking place, goondaism and hooliganism? Women all over India need to unite against the atrocities committed against them. I am asking the women India and abroad why do you keep quiet, and are you waiting till you are attacked, why are you not raising your voice? Do you need bajrangdal and ramsene to define a dresscode for you? You don't have your freedom to decide what you want to wear? Should you all want to be considered that you do not know to be modest? Why the women are quiet, for it did not happen to you, or do you approve it? Are you waiting for somebody else to assert for you?

India is democratic country. No one has the right to take law into their hand. Hardcore religious movement is definitely not part of democracy. Yes, deterioration of moral values among the younger generation is a serious problem our society is facing. Pub culture, beer culture, drug culture is a serious curse. I would call this “Pseudo Status Culture”. Parents drink alcohol, smoke and use unparliamentary words or follow Pseudo Status Culture in front of the children. Children naturally believe and follow the parents. What we need to do is, we parents should come out of this pseudo status culture and be an example to our future generation. Talibanization definitely will not solve such problems. But talibanization will grow with the help of “Pseudo Status Culture.” Choice is ours, we earn our future with what we do and what we practice.

It is dowright Outrageous and shameful act which should be condemned strongly . This action should have a very strong reaction . The people who claim responsibility should be taken to task and an example should be set so that in future we dont have such recurring incidents. Else we will have more number of such incidents.

Actually these boys are jobless and they feel a sense of hopelessness creeping into them when they see around people enjoying and there are some vested politicians who throw some bread crumbs at them to meet their own political agenda. The people behind this despicable act should be punished immediatley or Mangalore will go the Taliban way.........Managlore is slipping.its time to act.....before matters goes from bad to worse....Jai Hind

I ve been a student in mangalore for the last 6 years and am from mangalore. i think all the news channels were sleeping all the while, because this is not the first such inccidents have been happening. Everybody knows the Ram Sena u call it,the Bajranga dala all are part of one big organization the BJP.And thats the obvious reason why there was no reaction from the CM.

Im sure he'll be cooking a story which will be out tomorow morning. Half the riots happening in mangalore happen because of these people who take the law in their hands.and if u dont know this was actually a small issue made big.the big issues are usually not shown ie. the killings.weapons used like the "long" which is a means of slaughter in mangalore and which happens every fortnight.

I am proof to all this because I have lived in these times and situations At first I found it a bit scary because I am an NRI had an upbringing in Kuwait. But by the later stages it just became part of life.these issues you'll talk about happen too often and restricts our freedom.

Now ill tell you another thing when the Hindu Muslim riot had taken place in mangalore 2 years back.NDTV claimed that there were 3-4 deaths.  Well I can say that was just in my area.Muslim ladies and children were slaughtered by these so called protectors of the law,the figure being close to 30in the ullal region.these muslims seeked protection in christian houses. All these people are part of this big organization the BJP. If u go interview people in mangalore by not disclosing their identity most would say the same. None of the news chanels actually know the truth because their sources are not good enough and because they all are always too late at the scene.Sorry to say

We are ashamed to see these type of incidents happening in our country.how long we have to see these type of incidents happening around us?we are also an Indians we do have feelings about our culture and about our nations growth.by doing this type of stupid and silly things nobody can serve the nation in any way.we are not supposed to take the law in our hands.we are really wondering the comments made by the spokes person of Ram sena.

In his 15minutes talk he has changed his words more than 3 times.firstly he refused to recognise the pepole behind this when he was counter attacked with the question then he said we are doing it with the purpose saving indian culture but the gentlemen failed to recognise, nobody in this world attacks on women. So its our prime duty to make understand the people of bajrangdal and Ramsena to recognise the women, children and public properties. Unfortunately the government of karnataka not taking any kind of steps to stop these kind of activities.if same continues, we fear that one day it will be very difficult to go market and buy daily needs.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce to the world, the Hindu Taliban. Monkey groups like the Ram Sene and The Bajrang Dal must be crushed before Mangalore or India for that matter turns out to be Afghanistan/Pakistan part 2. And then we always have the Americans and Brits to sort these  out. A few months back, these same people were distributing books for the poor people.

A few months later, they are attacking the locals. A few years later they will order the shutdown of pubs and probably order all women and girls to stay at home. I doubt India will progress if these desperate monkeys are allowed to chat like this. And the sad part is that the chief minister is mixed with all of them.

Our State govt is clapping and we are ashamed. We have wrong people representing Karnataka. During such a recession, lot of loot money of bribe may be available. Say no more. Our govt of Karnataka is unfit to rule because they are part of creation of the worst. Have we seen such a day in Karnataka, perticularly in Mangalore? As a girl I am absolutely outraged by the way in which these girls were so shamelessly attacked in broad daylight. What gives the Sri Ram Sena the right to decide the kind of behaviour women should indulge in? And on what basis are they making the allegation that the women were indecently dressed? All the women in the videos are wearing pants and not shorts as claimed by Sri Ram Sena. The authorities must take severe action against this so called 'moral policing' and these kind of fanatic organisations must be completely banned. This kind of lawlessness gives our city a bad name. I definitely wouldnt feel safe if I went back to Mangalore as long as these kind of organisations exist

Outrageous to say the least! This kind of uncivilised behaviour in the 21st century is a shame to our country. I cannot understand why should someone infringe on my freedom to enjoy my hard earned money in a pub or restaurant. If I do something unlawful let someone complain to the proper law enforcing authority. How can someone take law into his hands and assault the one who exercises his freedom in a democratic country. The outfits that support such uncivilised behaviour should be banned. This is not an isolated incident. Such 'goondism' is taking place also in other cities of India.

The fearless (on camera) way they went on their heinous act suggests they fear nothing. Unfortunately these activists are third rate citizens. Why wait catch them and punish them they are caught on video. They have political nexus for sure. People, before bringing BJP to power think again. Dear Young students do not be upset on the issue, they are your protectors and you only voted them and they are in power. It’s like Taliban Rule in the city. Women cannot go on motorbikes with a friend or own brother, they should not wear jeans, they should not dance, they should not have a boy friend, No more short skirts, and many more rules on agenda of Rama Sene and Bajarang Dal to be implemented in Mangalore on or before 14 Feb 2009.So girls and boys be prepared!!

If such moral poiciing continues, our university/colleges will be haunting. We women are in 21st centry when being clad in Sari and getting out of the house just to go for worship cannot be expected. When today a family cannot survive on just the man's income, women need liberty to move about. Slavery is the practice of primitive society.

We are glad that in India at least Media is very strong. Many question arises. Who gave the authority to these goondas take law into their hands. Are they new brand of Taliban outfit? If the world cries to ban Taliban why not these fanatic groups in India immediately. Molesting, hitting girls at day time is what type of culture? Who gave them the authority to indulge this type of heinous crime? Which politicians are behind them? Is Home Minister is incapable as regularly miscreants activities are happening in Mangalore and peace is destroyed. Is our police department is incapable or are they being terrorized and controlled so that their hands and legs are tight. The only solution if the Karnataka Govt. in incapable of handling law and order, then there is no choice but Indian President Rule.
