Mangaluru, June 24: The city’s growing vehicular density, coupled with inadequate parking infrastructure, has led to a sharp rise in parking violations, with fines amounting to Rs 12.4 lac collected over the past five months from motorists found parking illegally across various locations.

According to traffic police data, a total of 8,885 parking violation cases were registered in 2025, fetching fines worth Rs 47.2 lac. In 2026 so far, 2,294 cases have already been recorded, indicating a continuing trend of violations and steady revenue from penalties.

With the number of vehicles rising steadily, parking stress has intensified across the city. While some wider roads permit roadside parking, many stretches remain too narrow, with parked vehicles significantly obstructing traffic flow.

Violations are also being reported during public events held in function halls, where vehicles parked along roadsides add to congestion. Footpath parking remains another persistent issue, with M G Road witnessing repeated instances of vehicles blocking pedestrian walkways.

Frequent violations have been recorded in Kadri, Shivabagh Junction, St Agnes, Falnir, Pandeshwar, Ballalbagh to Warehouse Road, Urwa Market Road, K S Rao Road, B T Road and Rathabeedi, where roadside parking violations continue unabated.

In several cases, the absence of adequate parking facilities in shopping complexes and commercial buildings is forcing visitors to park along roads, worsening traffic movement. Authorities have already issued directions to building owners to ensure sufficient parking provision, said DCP (Traffic) K Ravishankar.
