IAF hits JeM's biggest camp, Pakistan vows 'befitting response'

Updated

New Delhi/Islamabad, Feb 26 (IANS): Twelve days after a JeM suicide bomber killed 40 CRPF troopers, India on early Tuesday struck the Jaish-e-Mohammed's (JeM) biggest training camp at Balakot killing "a very large number" of terrorists and their trainers. Within hours, Pakistan threatened a "befitting response".

While the Pakistani military claimed the area hit by India was close to the Line of Control (LoC), Reuters described Balakot as a town in a remote valley in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. There is also Balakote -- as different from Balakot -- in the Pakistani-administered Kashmir.

As celebrations erupted across India, Foreign Secretary Vijay K. Gokhale told the media that "in an intelligence-led operation in the early hours of today, India struck the biggest training camp of JeM in Balakot. In this operation, a very large number of JeM terrorists, trainers, senior commanders and groups of jehadis who were being trained for fidayeen action were eliminated.

"This facility at Balakot was headed by Maulana Yusuf Azhar (alias Ustad Ghouri), the brother-in-law of (JeM leader) Masood Azhar."

Pakistan admitted that the IAF planes struck Balakot but claimed that they returned when it scrambled its war planes and that there were no losses on the ground.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the Indian jets were forced to return "owing to the timely response of the Pakistan Air Force" and warned that Islamabad has "the right to self-defence and (give) a befitting response".

Pakistan Army spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor said earlier that the Indian intrusion in Muzaffarabad sector happened within "AJK" (Azad Jammu Kashmir), 3-4 miles from the LoC that divides Kashmir between the two countries.

"Under forced hasty withdrawal the aircraft released payload which had free fall in an open area. No infrastructure got hit, no casualties," he said following an uproar in Pakistan about Indian jets flying deep into its territory.

Pakistan Prime Minister summoned a meeting in Islamabad to review the situation. In New Delhi, External Affairs Minister called an all-party meeting.

Gokhale said the Indian government was "firmly and resolutely committed to taking all necessary measures to fight the menace of terrorism. Hence, this non-military pre-emptive action was specifically targeted at the JeM camp.

"The selection of the target was also conditioned by our desire to avoid civilian casualties."

He said India had been providing to Islamabad the "location of terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir" from time to time. But Pakistan keeps denying their existence.

Gokhale said that such "massive training facilities capable of training hundreds of jehadis could not have functioned without the knowledge of Pakistani authorities...

But Pakistan has taken no concrete action to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism on its soil, he added.

"Credible intelligence was received that the JeM was attempting another suicide terror attack in various parts of the country (India), and the fidayeen jehadis were being trained for this purpose.

"In the face of this imminent danger, a pre-emptive strike became absolutely necessary."

The JeM, which is based in Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the February 14 suicide bombing at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir which killed 40 CRPF troopers. It was the worst attack on security forces on a single day in Jammu and Kashmir.

India strikes back : Modi chairs CCS, IAF on high alert

New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS): The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was underway on Tuesday in the wake of reports claimed by Islamabad that Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and returned after dropping a payload in Pakistan.

All the IAF bases were on high alert anticipating a reaction from Pakistan to the strikes carried out by the Indian fighter jets in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Balakot early on Tuesday.

Sources said that the IAF bases along the borders and inside are fully geared to deal with any eventuality. Air defence systems were activated to deal with any intruders along the International Border and the LoC.

The airborne radars were keeping a close vigil on the activities inside Pakistan, the sources added.

The CCS meeting was also attended by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and other government officials.

Though the Centre was yet to make an official statement, Minister of State for Agriculture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat tweeted that the IAF carried out aerial strikes across the LoC and destroyed terrorist camps.

Shekhawat is the first functionary of the government to confirm from the Indian side that the strikes have taken place.

Some of the prominent veterans, who retired recently, have already hailed the move.

"Air strikes by 12 Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft at terror camps in Balakot this morning. 1,000 kg precision bombs used. Pakistan accepts. See images below," tweeted retired Lt Gen Satish Dua, who served as chief of the integrated staff to the chairman of the chiefs of staff committee till November 2018.

Former Director General of Military Operations retired Lieutenant General Vinod Bhatia said that India demonstrated political and military will by "apparently" employing the air strikes.

He added that there was a need to raise cost for Pakistan and the Pakistan Army to ensure they do not carry out terror attacks against India.

"Picture abhi baaki hai," he said.

The CCS meeting comes after the Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Asif Ghafoor confirmed in a tweet early Tuesday that the IAF planes dropped the payload near Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa before leaving in haste as the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) scrambled its war planes.

The alleged incident took place in the Muzaffarabad sector, claimed Radio Pakistan.

Tuesday's development follows a suicide attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, on February 14 that killed 40 troopers.

The attack was claimed by Pakistan-based militant group, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and prompted a spike in tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

India strikes back : Air Force jets cross LoC , destroy terror camps with bombs

New Delhi, Feb 26 (Agencies) : 12 Mirage 2000 Indian Fighter jets struck terror camps across the LoC at 3:30 am on Tuesday, 26 February, and dropped 1,000 kg bombs destroying the camps, reported ANI quoting IAF sources.

However, Pakistan is reportedly denying any damage caused to life or property.

Earlier, Pakistan Armed Forces spokesperson, Major General Asif Ghafoor, on Twitter claimed "Indian Air Force violated the Line of Control. Pakistan Air Force immediately scrambled. Indian aircraft gone back."

The alleged violation by IAF comes days after the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF jawans were martyred.

There was a huge blast heard near Balakot but the quantum of the damage has not been ascertained, according to reports

Pak alleges that the IAF released “payload” in haste on their way back

The last time IAF intentionally crossed border was in 1971.

While saluting the brave jawans who lost their lives in the terrorist attack and empathizing with their families, the daring air force personnel who have given a fitting reply to the terrorists, why everybody has forgotten about the internal "financial thugs", acting like "patriots", who looted 10s of 1000s of crs of public money and fled the country with the loot under the very eyes of the watchdogs, and many, here, who are roaming freely? Does that looted money not contain the "blood" of the innocent citizens of this great country?

Why look out notices issued for some of the recently involved, proven, big financial fraudsters involving a pvt bank, instead of straight away putting them behind bars and seizing all their illgoten wealth and using it for the welfare of those to whom it belongs?

One financial thug who has escaped with a big booty of 10k cr of PSU banks is supposedly boasting from his host country that he cannot be extradited under any circumstances as we don't have an extradition treaty; moreover he has invested heavily in that country to keep them pacified!!

Such huge financial frauds involving public money should be treated equivalent to "manslaughter" as it involves the blood of every citizen of this country, and those involved should be given exemplary punishment so that no one dare do such frauds again!!

WHY ARE WE SO SOFT ON THIS ISSUE??

The top five biggest military spenders were the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and India, which accounted for 60 percent of global military spending. The U.S. spent $610 billion on its military in 2017, a little over a third of worldwide expenditures.

Defense Budget 2018-19. Union Budget for the financial year 2018-19, presented by the Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley in the Parliament, envisaged a total outlay of Rs. 24,42,213 crore. Out of this, Rs 2,95,511.41 crore has been earmarked for Defence.

Overall every citizen is a part of it, and it is not only Modi or IAF. It is the courage of the IAF personals but the great support of all citizens too. Every citizen should be proud and need together to save India.

The options for Pakistan is really limited as it stands absolutely isolated ...even it's arab brethren have deserted them ..the OIC has invited india as a guest member .India has to do the same actions which Israel takes ..every misadventure should be followed by precise surgical reaction..All the arabs who were supporting Palestine have now washed off their hands ..and want to open relationship with Israel ..I bow down to trump and USA and Israel
India has successfully surrounded Pakistan ..from all borders except the Chinese parts ..From Afghanistan ..Iran etc..

If Pakistan has little bit of common sense ..it will dismantle all terror camps and will stop barking about Kashmir before its too late ..A response now from Pakistan is what India is eagerly waiting for a final push for their ultimate strategic goal..

India has full sovereign right to defend its borders when threatened. But Prime Minister Modi Soon after Indian air strikes taking credit in an election rally in Rajasthan, saying ‘country is in safe hands’ is unacceptable.
If all the credit has to go it should be our proud 'forces'. The BJP and Modiji should refrain from 'national security' for the political gain.
They should also remember that these air strikes don't keep the 'Rafale Jet' scam forever or Pulawama terror strike compromising the security threat. These strikes don't win the bread and butter of farmers in distress or millions of unemployed youth who are given false promise of two crores jobs.
India has fought four wars with Pakistan 1947,65 & 71. Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi brilliant decision liberated Bangladesh and removed Eastern threat in which more than 90,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered more than 90,000 Pakistani military and civilians. In the words of one Pakistani author, "Pakistan lost half its navy, a quarter of its air force and a third of its army".
Unlike BJP in 1999 in 'Kargil war' they did coffin scams, late Indira never took credit for war nor Congress. It was service to the nation. Those who know little about the past history 50 years back Indira Gandhi got the Indian Air Force to bomb Mizo National Front who took arms launched Operation Jericho to throw out Indian forces stationed in Mizoram launching simultaneous attacks on Assam Rifles garrisons in Aizawl and Lunglei. The next day, the Mizo National Front declared independence from India.
If PM Modi is thinking he wants to be late Indira Gandhi to win elections it will be the wrong idea.
The surgical strike before Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, now 'Jaish' terror camp attacks across Pakistan side before 2019 Lok Sabha elections has similarities.
The BJP and Modi needed hyper-nationalism from losing elections badly against opposition unity. So this strike will come as a gift to deflect the nation from reality.

Everybody knows and have heard what Modi had said in the rally in Rajasthan. National defense and integrity is not a game as you make out. He did not even mention Pak once. He was playing to the gallery and said all those things that is expected for his role. Do not see politics as yet. That turn will come later in the year, when full blown campaign is on.
And on Kargil, it is the "dhagabaaz" version that you are narrating. You have problems I understand; but when someone disputes national security and integrity, there is only one word.

Amidst all the celebrations we must not forget that raging a war is not a solution. And this will be a war against our own people. The 20 year old lad did not walk / enter from across he was one of our own. Communication is key ..which our authorities have been pushing back...and when someone suggests it that individual is thrashed. When the rest of India (including myself ) sit in the comfort of our homes and loved ones we have a small fraction of people from our own country living in constant fear. They are forced to leave their homes in search of new avenues.Trust me the condition there is no better than of the people of Syria seeking refuge. If a teenage resorts to violence, isn't it our duty to reason out why he did it?
The only ones who have lost everything dearly are the ones living there and the families of our security personnel.

Please people see sense, raging a war is only Bandaid therapy when the real need is to investigate the root cause and find a way forward.

Kashmiris take education from Indian universities (outside of Kashmir) like you and I do. In 70 years your and my ancestors paid tax for their up keeping. They still have issues and take support from Pakistan. India has been too kind to them.
Time has come and they need to select between failing Pakistan and normal India. Kashmir as a separate state with the land and potential they have is a disaster in the making. With so much investment from rest of India, they have only once choice. Renounce violence and see their future within Indian dominion.
As of war with Pakistan, this is inevitable. Peace always comes with a price. Pakistani Military owns a country. Indian republic has military for its defense. If Pak Military is a problem, our armed forces must be given full support to neutralize the threat to our country.

Wow! That is a nice piece of news I received for many days now. Pakis always thought that India would never make their threat a real. They did not learn lesson from the surgical strike and wanted a big bamboo in their back. I knew something is on the cards and we would hear that “explosion” soon and Modi did not disappoint us. The heavy dose India gave to pakis is enough for sometime to come. I am using the term “sometime” because pakis are like dog’s tail, which cannot be straightened even if it is put in a rigid pipe. They will go back to their old tactics sooner or later. They say killing Indian military and civilians is jihad against India. I would say the real jihad is the one India did, the elimination of terrorists.
Though the Pakis are now threatening to hit back, they are aware while India can afford a long war with them, they can ill-afford even a short war with India, as such it is better for them just to shout from their roof top saying” nothing happened”, like they did during surgical strike.
Long Live India! Love you Modi.

I saw a trailer of a bollywood movie many years back where the hero says addressing Pak' 'Unke Ghar mein Ghus ke maarna hain' . Indians and Pakis and Indian Paki supporters laughed it off . It was trolled on Social Media. MMS was a butt of jokes. Today its a reality and we had to wait for someone like Modi to do it.

Hats off to the Indian Air Force.
Modiji only gave instructions and has no other role to play.
The physical airstrike was done by the efforts of our most honoured Air Force personnel.

The best of Modi lies in his achievement as a Congress Basher. This became more clearly evident on the occassion of honouring the Pulwama martyrs. Honouring a martyred soldier is such a sad and noble moment for all of us.

But dear Modiji uses this occasion to criticize the Congress. How cheap can he get. He has now explored even the lowest depths of lowliness. He has stooped so low that nothing more of the lowly depths are left to explore

On a separate note, the aircrafts that conducted the strike are built by HAL and not by your dear Modiji sponsored Amabni Defence that is fit to manufacture Tussu Patakis.

Also india has to be careful and security should be tightened as the terror group will now definately take revenge.. any time where.... not only striking is important we have to be ready for the counter attack..
definately Modiji will have some plans... but we as indian have to support him.... police or army persons cannot be everywhere.. if we find any suspicious acts by anyone it should be immediately noted to the police....

A large and responsible country does not attack and retrieve. They normally think through. I really hope Pakistan retaliates and conducts a 15 day war. It will finish Pakistan economically and the Pak military will be deplete of its hardware. No country on earth will give any loan that they know very well will finance a war that has nothing to do with return on Investment. Pak will be left with only one option....nuclear strike accompanied by suicide for a state called Pakistan. It will earn the dubious record of being a country that existed for the shortest period in world history. Yes, there will be casualties on both sides. That is OK. At the moment it is only one side that is taking casualties, that is us.

Most of HAL employees attend work just to enjoy perks and have meals at heavily subsidised Conteens. They could not manufacture LCA properly even after importing 80% of parts including main engine. Bhakts are dancing as if Modi was the pilot and Shah his co pilot. Hats off to the Indian armed forces who have always answered the nation's call. It is because of them at we are able to sleep in peace. Governments will come and go. Surgical strikes have been happening for the past 60 plus years and will continue happening. Only weak governments will brag about them to gain election mileage. Smart governments will never brag. It is for our nation's enemies to shiver at the might and courage of our men in uniform and not for the political parties to brag and take credit. Any government in place today would have taken the same steps after attacks like Pulwama.

Bombing after crossing the line of control is an option but to announce it before action & after all the camps are deserted is a foolish act & waste of money & resources of already depleted air force.
This is all propaganda for election or gimmick at the expense of Indian Tax Payers!
In the past too surgical strikes have taken place with airforce crossing the LOC but airdropping the commandos & coming back.
The same way many a times the terrorists have vacated the camps they had set up in Pakistan controlled Kashmir & it is only a symbolic attack to warn them that is conveyed by this attack.
In reality India claims those places that are occupied by Pakistan as its, so India strikes at its own territory unlike in 1971 when Indian armed forces had made deep inroads into Pakistan & now Bangaldesh & had in total possession of the same until it was vacated after the war agreement.

You can disagree, 'cos media is harping on fake news glorifying some deeds while not questioning why 56" failed to stop terror attacks as he boasted in 2014,
why more than 350 Kg RDX loaded vehicle was not detected despite intelligence inputs?
Give credit to our Armed Forces which isn't getting OROP as promised by PM, defense budget has been cut, tax payers money is being wasted on propaganda & favoring bhais from Gujarath,
Will he take credit for defeat or failure to stop terror on himself rather than keeping quiet for 7 days or going on Photo shoot while our armed forces were getting killed in Pulwama?
Fake Nationalists who have failed in all fronts are very furious when a deserted camp gets hit & go on mania not understanding its only hype & nothing tangible gets achieved by these gimmicks.
DeMonetization has stopped all terror attacks, he claimed, black money grew more afterwards,.
Despite surgical strike terror didn't stop in India, this bombing won't stop it either, India needs a govt., that has a vision, & not a govt. that thrives on division & not a knee jerk reacting political entity which makes hay even in the death of our soldiers.

should be shameful to not accept the leadership of our PM and divide people.. we support our captain's decisions and need to respect him. If not we r not fit to be in this county or ship.. how much u will blame the captain and his followers.. according to me who can't support PM or Captain should not travel... at least accept MODI is our leader.
