Australian Cardinal found guilty of sexual offences

Melbourne, Feb 26 (IANS): Australian Cardinal George Pell, who used to be the third most powerful figure in the Vatican, was pronounced guilty of child sexual abuses by a jury in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Pell, the highest-ranking priest of the Australian Catholic Church, raped a 13-year-old altar boy in the 1990s and sexually abused another boy of the same age at the prestigious St. Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne, Efe news reported.

The verdict was already issued on December 11 but could not be disclosed in Australia as a suppression order had been issued by the court, which was lifted on Tuesday.

The sentence was made public after the Vatican held a summit to address pedophilia in the Church, in which Pope Francis on Sunday.

Chief judge Peter Kidd was expected to issue a sentence within the next two weeks in the case, as Pell is currently free on bail and could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The five charges that Pell, aged 77, was found guilty of date back to a Sunday in 1996 after he was officiating a solemn mass as archbishop of Melbourne.

One of the charges was for committing sexual penetration of a child under 16 and the four others for committing an indecent act with or in the presence of a child under 16.

The verdict comes after months of a complicated judicial process which was kept secret to protect the presumption of innocence of Pell and the abandonment of a second trial for the alleged abuse of minors in a swimming pool in Ballarat, his hometown, in the 1970s.

The charges in this second trial have been dropped after the judge decided that there was problems with the evidence.

Pell has already been dismissed as the Vatican's chief financial officer and Pope Francis expelled him from his inner circle, known as the Group of Nine, or C-9 shortly after the verdict in December 2018.

The Pope offered eight guidelines to eradicate the "monstrosity" of child abuse, but the lack of concrete measures disappointed many victims.

Pell's legal team has said that it plans to appeal the verdict.

Life for the priests is not easy .This is indicated in book of Genesis (3:15) when Lord God put a curse on the serpent and said “I will make you and the woman hate each other; her offspring and yours will always be enemies. Her offspring will crush your head, and you will bite her offspring's[a] heel.” Later Christ in Mat 16:18 gave an assurance to St. Peter the that gates of hades will not prevail against the Church. There will be trials and tribulation but final victory will be ours. Mat 22:21 governs the relationship between God and the state. Therefore it is equally important that state thinks twice about
fiddling in what is perceived as Divine teachings and what is considered as long standing traditions as long as it does not cause physical harm.
We are called upon to pray for the church leadership. Everybody has the legal right to criticize but moral right to criticize belongs only to those who pray for the leadership. What can we do our bit for the priests?

I take the liberty to suggest the following consecration prayer to be said before every mass.

“ Abha Father,I consecrate the Pope,Bishops,Priests,Religious ,all those who are laboring in your vineyard and all those who are attending the mass to the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus and immaculate Heart of Blessed Virgin Mary. Let us experience great transformation so that we will live pure and holy lives. Transform all our problems and difficulties for our favor and for your greater glory. Amen.
St. Michael, defender of the people Of God , pray for us
St. Gabriel, who announced to Mary, the incarnation of Divine Word, pray for us
St.Raphael, who delivered Sarah from the devil ,pray for us.
    Gaurdian Angels pray for us”

May I also suggest the following personal prayer “Chaplet of Mercy (Holy wounds). The petition should preferably be for all the Catholics who are receiving Eucharist unworthily.
This prayer and this can be found in the prayer book" Rejoice Unto Him” Page no 159

I stand with the victim, this one, or from any case that may come up to hearing in future. No child, male or female, should go through what is called sexual abuse. Neither from a common man nor from those who vowed to be a celibate. Well, a celibate is liable to double the punishment - one from the court, and the other from its order, for being an offender to have broken the vow.
