Drugs, cash seized in Manipur border town


Imphal, Feb 27 (IANS): A combined team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police on Tuesday seized drugs and cash in a raid at a house in state's border town Moreh in Tengnoupal district, police said.

Moreh's Station House Officer L. Waiphei said, "Acting on an intelligence input the combined team raided a house located in Ward No. 7 and recovered 2.37 kg of brown sugar, 244 gram of high quality heroin, 65,400 tablets of a new drug which is very powerful and addictive."

The value of the seized drugs is estimated at Rs 8 crore in the international market, he said, adding the team also seized Rs 23 lakh in Indian currency and 1.90 lakh in Myanmarese Kyat.

The drug trafficker identified as Zingkhongen Lungdim was arrested and an FIR lodged against him.

Police sources said that Moreh has become the conduit for drug trafficking in the entire northeastern region and in the past, an army officer and the son of a prominent politician were nabbed for their alleged involvement in the racket.
