1 killed, dozens trapped as Indonesian gold mine collapses

Jakarta, Feb 27 (IANS): At least 1 gold miner has been killed, 13 wounded and dozens trapped after an illegal gold mine collapsed in North Sulawesi province of Indonesia, a disaster agency official said on Wednesday.

Poor mine infrastructure and too many holes dug by miners amid unstable soil condition has been blamed for the Tuesday night incident, Xinhua news agency reported.

The accident took place at Bakan village, National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. The rescue operation was underway.

"It is believed more than 60 miners were hit by the falling soils, rocks and other materials during the collapse, so far 14 of them have been evacuated," he said.
