Kuwait: Boubyan Strikers Dajeej, Dragon Queens win MAK Champion’s Trophy

Kuwait, Mar 1: Mogaveers Association Kuwait, affiliated to Indian embassy Kuwait, community welfare association of non-resident Mogaveeras, based in Kuwait organised national level volleyball and throw ball tournament under the title of ‘MAK Champion’s Trophy 2019’ on February 25 for the third time. The tournament was held at American International School Maidan Hawally, Kuwait.

The tournament coincided with the national day of Kuwait. The weather was pleasant, the participants and the MAK members were all geared up for the tournament.

The day long tournament commenced at 7.30 am with a grand opening ceremony headed by Suresh Salian. On behalf of MAK management committee, Nishanth Salian welcomed all the distinguished guests, participating teams, MAK members and all the sports enthusiasts.



A special prayer was also made for martyred soldiers of Pulwama Attack. The chief guest of the day Anup Singh-Attache Indian Embassy Kuwait was not able to come due to unavoidable circumstances however he sent his best wishes for the event.

Noel Cutniha, captain of Boubyan Stikers (Volley Ball) and Juliet Dsouza, captain of Dragon Queens (Throw Ball) were honoured for their excellent contribution towards sports in Kuwait and also for their outstanding support for MAK.

This was followed by the National anthem of Kuwait and India.

The other guests for the day were, Abdo Abboud Chidiac , in-charge of American International School Indoor Stadium Kuwait who has given outstanding support to MAK, Manoj Bangera - advisor of Billava Sangha, Valli Sanctis - businessman and the one who has always been supporting MAK since inception, and Jagadeeshwara Shanubhogue, executive committee Tulukoota Kuwait.

The guests conveyed their best wishes and good luck to the participating teams and organizers.

Rajesh Mendon, president of MAK in his speech welcomed the gathering and stressed the importance of playing with true sportsman spirit and thanked all the teams for their support as this event is done for MAK welfare projects.

The president of MAK, Rajesh Mendon and the general secretary Poonam Mendon inaugurated the volley ball and throw ball tournament by cutting the ribbon and serving the ball to the captains of the teams respectively.

The participating volley ball teams are as below:

United Eagles, Bell and John KSAC, Boubyan Strikers Al Rai, Kuwait Mahboula Volley Ball Strikers, MAK Tigers, Boubyan Strikers Dajeej, Kunjal Friends and Salmiya Strikers.

The participating throw ball teams are as below:

Team Alfa, Dragon Queens and Team Scorpions

The volley ball inaugural first round match started between Team United Eagles and Team Bell and John KSAC and the first round of throw ball inaugural match was between Team Alfa and Team Scorpions. The teams played with full enthusiasm and viewers enjoyed and experienced the spectacular show. As the day progressed matches kept rolling one after another.

The sponsors of the event were Badar Al Samaa and Al Rathat Establishment. The referees for volley ball were Alexander Mathew and Sainuddin. The referees for throw ball were Ivan D souza and Arun Mendon.

The scorers for throw ball team were Geetha Suvarna, Sachidanada Suvarna and Rakshith Suvarna.

The scorers for volley ball team were Kishore Kotian and Nithin Suvarna.

The announcements were done by Suresh Salian and Kishore Kotian. Sumptuous breakfast, lunch and snacks were provided by Royal Star Caterers. Beautiful moments of the day were captured by the MAK photographers Paresh Karkera, Kiran Kumar and Nishanth Salian.

Design of brochure and banner was by Sachidanada Suvarna and wonderful back ground music was by DJ Rakesh Suvarna. Sound system was provided by Anand Sounds.

Winners

The volley ball contest ended with a finale of matches between Team Bell and John KSAC and Team Boubyan Strikers Dajeej. After a tough battle between the two strong teams, Team Boubyan Strikers Dajeej bagged the winner’s trophy and team Bell and John KSAC were declared the first runner up. The second runners up trophy were won by Team United Eagle. MAK player of the tournament for volley ball was secured by Evin Edward of Team Boubyan Strikers Dajeej.

On the other hand, throw ball tournament ended with league matches. Team Dragon Queens defeated the opponents and became the Hat trick winners for the third consecutive year. First runners up was won by Team Alfa and Team Scorpions stood up as the 2nd runners up. MAK player of the tournament for throw ball was secured by Jacintha Fernandes of Team Alfa.

Prize distribution ceremony

Shibu Paul, managing director Boubyan Gas Company graced the prize distribution ceremony. As a token of respect he was presented with a floral bouquet.

President Rajesh Mendon and convenor Ramesh Kidiyoor awarded the trophies and medals to winners, whereas the MAK members gave away the trophies and medals to runners up team and the individual achievers.

A raffle draw was conducted by MAK and the winners are as below:

1st Prize: Smijith

2nd Prize: Kavya Shetty

3rd Prize: Vally Sanctis

The 10 consolation prize winners were Santhosh, Nithin, Udaya, Pavan, Larissa, John, Damphir, Pranvi, Daman and Santhosh.

In her vote of thanks, Poonam Mendon thanked each and everyone who were responsible for the success of the tournament especially the participants, sponsors, organizers, MAK volunteers’, MAK management committee and executive committee. Special thanks were given to the management and staff of American International School Maidan Hawally for the awesome venue.
