Mangaluru, Mar 2: The district chief and sessions court, on Saturday March 1, delivered a judgement, sentencing Rama Nalke (45) to two years of rigorous imprisonment. Nalke has been charged with causing the death of his wife at Bayadi in Marakada near Kavoor here during the month of May, 2018. The court however, treated this crime as culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The guilty has also been imposed with a fine of Rs 5,000.

Rama Nalke used to live at his rented residence a Bayadi along with wife, Mohini, and children, Dhanush (10), and Dhanyashree (8). On May 17 last year, he had come back after work and was consuming liquor at home to which his wife objected. Rama, in a fit of rage, reportedly kicked his wife in the abdomen region, as a result of which she collapsed to the ground. It is said that when Mohini did not get up the next morning, Rama inflicted burn injuries on her skin with burning bidi butt. Mohini had died at a hospital the same evening.

Kavoor police, who registered a case on the basis of Dhanush's complaint, conducted probe. Police inspector, K R Naik, had filed charge sheet. As Nalke was taken into custody by the police, his children have been living with the family of Mohini's younger sister. Judge of the court, Kadlur Satyanarayanacharya, who conducted the hearing, examined 11 witnesses and pronounced on Saturday that Nalke was found guilty under sections 498A and 304 (11) of Indian Penal Code.

The court has ordered district legal services authority to arrange to admit Dhanush and Dhanyashree into a government residential school having good facilities in the city. It also asked Mohini's sister, Shashikala, to escort the children to the prison to meet their father once every month to ensure that the children do not totally get cut off from their father.

Both the children had adduced evidence in the court against their father. Dr Pawanchandra Shetty, who conducted post-mortem of the deceased, had also given elaborate details of the findings. Public prosecutor, Pushparaj Adyantaya, had appeared on behalf of the prosecution in the case.
